Fabulous Series!
Reviewed: 03-25-25
I so enjoyed listening to all four books in the series.. I would agree that Pinchot'"s narration of the fourth book was a bit over the top...but he is an actor by trade. Nonetheless, it did get a bit annoying. I had no complaint of his narration of books 2 and 3 and the narrator of book one did just fine (Joe Barrett).
What is really scary is these fictional tales are very much in the realm of reality.

When the body of a bookseller is discovered, collapsed in a pool of blood in his Bristolian bookshop, it is immediately clear that he has been murdered. What is unclear is how someone could have met such a violent end in this quiet, peaceful place. DS Cross is adept at dismissing red-herrings but a worrying development in his personal life has left him hopelessly distracted, leaving his usual means of deciphering evidence challenged.

When it was good, it was very, very, very good! But, there were times I almost gave up on the book and I think that was because at the beginning it was rather slow moving but more so because I became so frustrated with the heavy Irish/Scottish accent. I simply could not understand what was being said and thus missed a lot! Despite missing a lot, I still felt the storyline was perfection.

Given a 2nd chance, there won't be a 3rd!

Because this series was based in Minnesota where I was born and raised; despite having significant complaints/criticism about the first book in this series,, i decided to purchase book #2. I will not be purchasing any more! Basically, I have the same complaints/criticism; but amplified.
if I wanted cheesy love stories and gratuitous sex I would choose books from the romance genre. Why have such an emphasis on said topics in a so called 'thriller'?
Especially bothersome (to a greater degree than book #1), were the multiple mispronounced names of towns and lakes of Minnesota. I would think the author would make sure that the narrator pronounced them correctly and that a narrator would care enough to research the correct pronunciation before saying them on recording. Any reader born and raised in Minnesota would/will recognize the mispronounciation.
Additionally, I am left wondering why the author who used the REAL names of many REAL places in Minnesota (though often mispronounced), elected to make up many names of other towns referenced in the storyline?
As to the cover...there would NOT be flowers poking through the snow in the dead of winter when, as stated in the book, there was 3 feet of ice on the lake. What the heck, didn't the author notice this before approving the cover rendering?!
Lastly, I think a central element to a truly good thriller is a believable story line...this book was not believable.

The beautiful young woman is perfectly still, curled up in the trunk of the car, her long dark hair hiding her face. Her cotton blouse has ridden up a little, revealing two small dots an inch apart on her back. Just like the others. Guilt has kept FBI Agent Tori Hunter away from her home in Manchester Bay, Minnesota for 20 years, ever since her twin sister disappeared on the Fourth of July, when the girls should have been together. But when she receives an anonymous newspaper clipping about another missing girl, Genevieve, Tori is dragged back to the past.

Was okay but...
Reviewed: 01-01-25
As a Minnesotan, I always pursue Minnesota based stories because it is fun to recognize familiar places, situations, cultures, etc. This book satisfied me from that perspective. There were some errors in pronunciation and dialect but that didn't bother me much. . The storyline was some what typical and thus predictable . Also...why the gratuitous sex...if that was my interest I would choose from the Romance genre.. More often then not, the sex content is not necessary in a true 'thriller' though often sexual content is...and when it applies to the storyline, I do not mind.
lastly, I knew who was the guilty person in a very, very early chapter when the 'cast of characters were introduced. so that took A LOT of the thrill out of the so called 'Thriller'.
it is likely I will purchase another book by this author because I enjoy the Minnesota setting.

Narration Ruined It For Me
Reviewed: 11-16-24
I congratulate the author on developing a great story line, but it did drag on and on and on. I enjoyed how age-old and contemporary societal issues were interwoven into the story. But, as I said in my review title, I thought the narration was pretty horrible. Naomi sounded like she was 10 ( or younger) and far too often she didn't fully enunciate words. Maya' s dialogue or other female characters would all of a sudden sound like a man's voice. The narration problems added a lot of tedium to a story that already dragged a bit too much.
