About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Bookseller by Tim Sullivan, read by Finlay Robertson.

SOMEONE'S ABOUT TO TURN THEIR LAST PAGE...

'One of my favourite detectives.' ELLY GRIFFITHS

THE SETTING
The body of a bookseller is discovered, lying in a pool of blood in his Bristol bookshop. Police have one question: how did the man meet such a violent, murderous end in this peaceful place?

THE CONFLICT
DS Cross’s ability to dismiss red herrings is challenged by a worrying development in his personal life. Hopelessly distracted, he needs to rely on those around him in a way he has never been comfortable doing before.

THE MURDER PLOT
It may be a quiet profession, but it’s full of passionate, ambitious characters who know the value of a rare book. Their extensive reading means they also know how to get away with murder.

But is that enough to fool the tenacious DS George Cross?

Perfect for fans of MW Craven, Peter James and Joy Ellis, this is the seventh book in the bestselling series, which can be enjoyed in any order.

Cross Grows Culinary

A good murder mystery plot. Plenty of red herrings. I did have my eye on one of the culprits. I did not feel much sympathy for the murderer, and even less for the murder victim.
For our favorite bulldog detective, there is some family drama — some sad turns and some happy realizations, plus a fun gathering of the gang celebrating a birthday. Glad to see McKenzie again. I liked the introduction of cooking / culinary efforts into the main characterization. DCI Carter comes in for some scorn again, which for some reason didn’t quite jive with how his role played out in The Teacher. This book addresses some unfinished business (Warner’s story) left dangling from The Teacher. This is not my favorite of the series, but nonetheless a solid hit! My personal preference: I always like to see the courtroom aspect of a case, and I always enjoy Cross’s interaction with any lazy detectives (e.g., Warner) or any of the big cheese, e.g., the Chief Constable.

Different in a good way

neurodivergent, secrets, bookseller, justice, family-business, family-drama, family-dynamics, family-expectations, relentless, unputdownable, crime-fiction, rare-books, procedural, murder-investigation, working-partners, middle-aged, sly-humor, British-detective, fractured-families*****

DS George Cross and his partner (recently promoted) DI Josie Ottey become entangled in the bewildering murder of a relatively quiet bookseller at the longtime family business owned by the 90-year-old patriarch. The case and the characters steadily become more complex and the mystery more compelling. I thought it did OK as a standalone as this is the first DS Cross mystery I've read and enjoyed.

Meandering Storyline

Having read all the previous DS Cross books, this was a disappointment. Rather than focus on the crime and the solving thereof, the story meanders excessively through character insights, backstories and DS Cross’ family drama. In parts it reads like a daytime TV soap. That said when all the distractions are removed the plot is quite clever. Mr Sullivan is clearly a talented storyteller but for me he got the balance wrong on this one. Hopefully the next book will be back to the edge of seat thought provoking content.
