Story
In the 1970s, the ultimate trip for any backpacker was the storied “Hippie Trail” from Istanbul to Kathmandu. A 23-year old Rick Steves made the trek, and like a travel writer in training, he documented everything along the way: jumping off a moving train, making friends in Tehran, getting lost in Lahore, getting high for the first time in Herat, battling leeches in Pokhara, and much more. The experience ignited his love of travel and forever broadened his perspective on the world.

Story
Forest bathing is a gentle, meditative practice of connecting with nature. Simply being present with all of our senses, in a forest or other wild area, can produce mental, emotional, and physical health benefits. It is a simple, accessible antidote to our nature-starved lives and can inspire us to become advocates for healing our relationships with the more-than-human world. This book is both an invitation to take up the practice of forest bathing and an inspiration to connect with nature as a way to help heal both the planet and humanity.

Extractive and Cultural Appropriation
Reviewed: 07-08-23
I am all for forest bathing but marking trails w rocks does not follow the principles of Leave No Trace nor Reciprocity. Forests are ancient, sovereign, and sacred. There was no reverence for the forest itself. This book teaches us that the forest is another resource to extract for our pleasure with no thought about our connection to the forest. Like Yoga, Americans continue to stop these cultural appropriations

Story
Rosie Perez first caught our attention with her fierce dance in the title sequence of Do the Right Thing and has since defined herself as a funny and talented actress who broke boundaries for Latinas in the film industry. What most people would be surprised to learn is that the woman with the big, effervescent personality has a secret straight out of a Dickens novel. At the age of three, Rosie’s life was turned upside down when her mentally ill mother tore her away from the only family she knew and placed her in a Catholic children’s home in New York’s Westchester County.

I hope she continues to heal. We Puerto Ricans suffer from intergenerational and colonial trauma. May we all do the deep work that Rosie has done to heal and walk in love.

On April 25th, 1898, the United States declared war on Spain. Less than seven months later, a victorious America claimed the former Spanish colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands. To the American diplomat John Hay, the Spanish-American War was "a splendid little war". It had been popular, brief, and inexpensive, especially in terms of casualties. But the Spanish-American War marked a change in America's international role.

I cringed every time I heard the over exaggerated accents performed by the supporting cast. It’s a shame the “history” only reflects the casualties to the military and not the civilians.
