Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Like the author, I am a Veteran, having served two tours in Iraq and making it my career until my retirement. Also like Mr. Vance, I graduated summa cum laude, having put myself through school. I relate to other experiences and aspects of his story; and I appreciate his courage to share and inspire other “poor kids” like us.

A Tulsa Tale & Truths Spanning Generations
Reviewed: 06-10-24
This is my best friend’s favorite novel. She’s read it many times. I’ve always meant to do so; but there’s always another story competing for my attention or some task taking me elsewhere. Dori and I both hail from Tulsa, both of us accomplished with masters degrees focused on people and how their stories influence them on an individual and collective basis; so it’s that much more embarrassing that I’m only now listening to this. But such stories often bend our ears at the right (ripe) moment; so I will let it be.
The narration is just as it should be, I think, although at first I felt slighted by the twang he inflected. Tulsans don’t really sound the way we are portrayed in movies and television. Once I let the characters be who they are in the context of the story, I could not imagine this reading any other way.
I’ve been to the Admiral Twin Drive In movie; and am proud it still stands - one of few across the country. My military shop chief, Randy attended school with S.E. Hinton; and he talked with me about the author decades ago as we worked together on Tulsa’s F-16s at 138th FW. I was one of the “have-nots,” but my grades were stellar; so I could relate in many ways with the protagonist.
Thank you, Audible, for finally helping me experience The Outsiders. Stay golden.

Her copy is so pristine - like Edward at his onset - I chose to purchase the audiobook so as to not wound the spine or pages of her book. I shall return it to her tomorrow with exuberant thanks for recommending this lovely tale!
