About this listen

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: He was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely.

And then, one day, he was lost.

Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle, that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

Critic reviews

"This achingly beautiful story shows a true master of writing at her very best." (Publishers Weekly)

Editor's Pick

Difficult protagonists are my favorite protagonists
"This is the title that got me into children’s literature, beginning my decade-long career in the wonderful world of kidlit. Edward, the book’s protagonist, is a difficult one: a cherished but spoiled toy to an affluent young girl. As a result, he hasn’t experienced much beyond his privileged existence. But then he’s sent careening into the wider world, carried from one harrowing or bittersweet experience to another, until he emerges as a wiser and kinder version of himself. I believe most listeners will emerge from this listening experience similarly."

This is Sarah and Caitlin and we loved this book because it made us feel good about ourselves. We felt like we were part of the story. When Edward was on his journey he felt like he might never be loved again. He pushed through and he made it home.

Sarah age 8, Caitlin age 6.
