Starts gruesomely for good reason. Stick with it for a glimpse at what Mediterranean life must have been like for Christians and pagans soon after Christ’s resurrection.

Story
Folks in Moab live for ice cream socials, baseball, and the local paper’s weekly gossip column. Sheriff Winston Browne has watched over Moab with a generous eye for a decade, and by now he’s used to handling the daily dramas that keep life interesting for Moab’s quirky residents. But just after Winston receives some terrible, life-altering news, a seemingly mute runaway with no clear origin arrives in Moab. The residents do what they believe is right and take her in - until two suspicious strangers arrive and begin looking for her.

Getting into the story took a bit but it was worth the effort! A great transitional story when you’re in a book hangover. I rarely reread books; this will go on my reread list.

Story
Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

Unexpected entertainment!

I’m one of “those” people — if “book” is in the title, I’m intrigued. This hot topic of banned books takes unexpected twists in this often comical, laugh out loud story about a prank where old-fashioned books recommended by the town prude and chief banner of books are replaced with actual banned books inside their jacket covers. Just the right customer seems to pick up each one, and revelations, convictions, and education follow. Very clever story!

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

I’m fairly easy to please with books; however this story kept me anxious to find out whodunnit then had me wilting in disappointment. Then there was the lack of justice and legal resolution regarding the woman who’d been murdered. The writing is riveting but the final story line didn’t deliver.
