She writes amazing real characters that have depth, and often damage and history, but her characters are always real, but always have real problems, even when they’re on a mythical cruise ship, which looks an awful lot like a certain nerd cruise I used to go on. :-)

My partner had to push me to listen to this one, but I’m really glad she did, it wasn’t that I didn’t want to listen to it it’s that I was distracted by other fantasy books, but Mary Robinette always pays off.

If you haven’t read her Lady Astronaut series, it’s a must read.

The author puts a very human face on the cost of all of that destruction, shows very real characters, very human frailties, even as they are hurt more and more.

She gives credence to the bad coffee and lighting sewn throughout modern life, and the rare joys and kindnesses we can do for each other.

And gives a believable, honest face to evil and avarice. I don’t know why it took me so long to read it.

Love the narration: very well crafted and executed: McKenna has serious talent and dedication.

I love these books, they are thick as doorstops, but Follett weaves the stories as richly as pre-war lace.

To a beautiful trilogy. Back story and next steps for Zaynab, Dara, and of course Nahri and Ali were sometimes hard to hear/read, but still, very beautiful.

Our heroes have jobs, bosses, irksome coworkers, rich and powerful enemies, bus passes, and pajamas. They sometimes take light rail, sometimes historic trolleys, and sometimes scuff their knees. They are not all powerful, and sometimes their breakfast is less than ideal, like ours. But they still have family obligations, and family problems, and they still have to go to work in the morning. I think this would make a lovely, uncomfortable movie.

Merriam is a writer who knows the Cities well, and isn’t afraid to tell you, early on. Don’t let that bother or distract you, his characters have heart, vulnerability, flaws, and bravery.

The voice actor delivers a solid, gifted performance of Merriam’s work.

The reader and the special effects made this a very enjoyable book, now I’m going back and finding anything Andy Weir has ever written and anything this performer has ever recorded that I haven’t listened to yet, and making sure that I catch up on. 100% recommend

Not sure what I expected going into this, but what I found was some great stories, told a bunch of different ways, from authors I knew well and other authors that I only heard of, who is a great exposure to some other great authors, and I liked that it was definitely a little more spice and less vanilla

The prodigonist starts off impetuous and shallow, and develops as the story goes long much as anyone would like. My favorite part is always working out the system of magic, but it’s also entertaining to watch the protagonist make all of the basic engineering mistakes and have amazing confidence while those with more experience around him are amused by his motivations.

Instead of getting right what he wants when he goes into his first test, he ends up with something that isn’t quite expecting nor does his father want him to have, but it turns out to be something that’s useful to him and offers him different opportunities. Looking forward to reading the next book.
