Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Unexpected twists

The story keeps you guessing. Weird plot twist at the end. Might have been better if it had been mixed in earlier or if social worker had a narrative.

Story
Ancient writers observed that forests always recede as civilizations develop and grow. The great Roman poet Ovid wrote that before civilization began, “even the pine tree stood on its own very hills” but when civilization took over, “the mountain oak, the pine were felled.” This happened for a simple reason: trees have been the principal fuel and building material of every society over the millennia, from the time urban areas were settled until the middle of the nineteenth century. To this day trees still fulfill these roles for a good portion of the world’s population.

This book is excellent! It puts an unbelievable deeper understanding of greed and lack of sustainability built into civilization from the beginning of the modern age. I read thru hiking books, historical fiction, science, metaphysical and more. I don’t generally write reviews. This book is seriously impactful and if you like any of the above topics I hope you listen and it motivates everyone into more…. Understanding and love! I am even more grateful now for the old ( 100-200 yo Ponderosas) I get to hang out with! XO

Story
The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

This is a good hiking read.

The protagonist achieves some emotional intelligence by the end of this read. I enjoyed the teacher student aspect of the hiking companions. The places they camped and the people they meet were fun. I think his trail sex friend should write a hiking adventure book!

The author did a fantastic job filling in any missing pieces in this historical fiction novel. This mostly true story is an inspiration and I am so glad someone brought this story to us. It might be a little uncomfortable at times for some, but that’s real life. I recommend this book.

Once a person hikes a long trail, they catch the bug, but does it get any easier the second time around? Four years after starting the Appalachian Trail with his brother, Brian takes to the Continental Divide Trail for his second thru-hike in familiar company. However, trail life is not always as rewarding and romantic as the pictures you see or second-hand stories you hear.

Generalities and platitudes
Reviewed: 12-13-22
I’ve listened to more than 5 thru hikers books and this is my least favorite. There are no stories about shoes, setting up camp, personal struggles or meaningful interactions with other hikers, or the towns he visits. General platitudes about how great sunsets are (yea we know) or generic phrases about life with no hiking story to explain why it’s relevant. Not worth the time, boring.

The narrator was great, the content not so much. Simplistic and superficial. Too few details, before rushing to the next topic.
