Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in this startling and engaging new work, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millennia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species's existence.

evidence based outlook on the history of violence
Reviewed: 03-07-20
This book finally adds some long needed clarity on how violent the past was and how peaceful our life is now by comparison. Everyone needs to understand how through reason and gentle commerce we slowly purged our world of nonsense and violence and there is data to prove this.

Story
Terence McKenna hypothesizes that as the North African jungles receded, giving way to savannas and grasslands near the end of the most recent ice age, a branch of our arboreal primate ancestors left the forest canopy and began living in the open areas beyond. There they experimented with new varieties of foods as they adapted, physically and mentally, to the environment. Among the new foods found in this environment were psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

Story
From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

Greatest argument for speaking the truth
Reviewed: 04-30-19
Jordan puts me in meditative state with his voice and writing.
Even though at times a little academic and dense the message is clear and extremely valuable for everyone who is in search of meaning and understanding of society and of argument for individual betterment first.
I read twelve rules for life first and it was by far his best work yet but this book explored the foundation for his thoughts and drives in twelve rules and personally gave me a much deeper understanding of the concepts of individual truth and meaning.

Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, Defender of the Realm, the third volume of William Manchester’s The Last Lion, picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister - when his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill portrayed by Manchester and Reid is a man of indomitable courage, lightning-fast intellect, and an irresistible will to action.

By the end of the third book the man's jokes, attitudes and reactions give you a sense of kinship with one of the greatest leaders of all time. in addition to the extreme sense of historical familiarity, you also fall in love with the details of Churchill's life and his character. I'm glad I spent the time to listen to this book despite the at times difficult narration in comparison to the readers of the first two books. highly suggest you this book.

One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

I was turned off by the presentation style at first( listening to romanticized stories from the past is not really my thing). However once I started to focus on the laws themselves and only treating the stories as supplementary information, I realized that this is audio gold and every person who is struggling to fit in in their niche needs to hear this book. By the end I feel like the lessons I've learned should be taught by every dad everywhere to their kids.

Story
This second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors (at one point he had to put up his home for sale), he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles.

By far the best historical account of the time!
Reviewed: 10-26-16
Even though a lot of people complained about a different narrator of this book compared to the previous, I personally found that this narration is just as good or possibly even better than in the first book. This book is a must listen. It's a perfect account of Churchill's personality and the environment that lead him to make the hard decisions. I found myself disgusted with how shortsighted Chamberlain was and the parliamentary interplay of values, intrigues and power was extremely fascinating. As I said a must listen.
