Story
In 1959 Tibet, a Buddhist artifact of immense importance was seemingly lost to history in the turmoil of the Communist takeover. But when National Underwater and Marine Agency Director Dirk Pitt discovers a forgotten plane crash in the Philippine Sea over 60 years later, new clues emerge to its hidden existence. But Pitt and his compatriot Al Giordino have larger worries when they are ordered to recover a failed hypersonic missile from Luzon Strait. Only someone else is after it, too.

Like a 12 week Sat. movie suspense serial
Reviewed: 10-11-24
The book is written like the old short serial suspense thrillers from Saturday movies. The heroes are in one seemingly insurmountable danger/life threatening situation after another (e.g. adrift alone in the cold ocean about to tire and go under, or alone with a vicious killer whose gun is leveled menacingly at the hero's head). The hero is then rescued by an often improbable event (e.g. friendly submarine coincidentally surfacing next to, and rescuing, the tiring swimmer, or a distant, unseen and unknown sharpshooter killing the bad guy before he shoots the hero). The story is generally far fetched (similar to many adventure novels) but generally interesting. The narrator does justice to the need for excitement in the perilous situations and may be the best part of the book. I made it through, but often skipped ahead and probably missed one or two life threatening situations.

Story
When Browder’s young Russian lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was beaten to death in a Moscow jail in 2009, Browder cast aside his business career and made it his life’s mission to pursue justice for Sergei. One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Interesting and enlightening story. More minutiae in many cases than I felt warranted, but overall worth a listen.

Story
In Las Vegas to cover a motorcycle race, Raoul Duke (Thompson) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (inspired by a friend of Thompson) are quickly diverted to search for the American dream. Their quest is fueled by nearly every drug imaginable and quickly becomes a surreal experience that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. But there is more to this hilarious tale than reckless behavior, for underneath the hallucinogenic facade is a stinging criticism of American greed and consumerism.

absurd story
Reviewed: 08-09-22
If you enjoy narcissistic, often seriously drug impacted characters who engage in absurd behavior and dialogue, you may enjoy this book. If not, move on to another book. This book was a bit like the old Seinfield TV show, no plot and no apparent purpose, just scene after scene of outlandish or bad behavior. Some of the actions and dialogues by the protagonists are mean or hurtful to others, although not brutal. There are entertaining moments and some weirdly funny places, but overall I was glad to finish.

Story
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

Found it difficult to maintain my concentration while listening; the narrator sounded mechanical and boring and the content was too sophisticated for idle listening, or even mildly Conscientious listening. The subject itself was intriguing, but the explanations were difficult to follow.

The performance made the author sound angry at most of the food industry. While there were some positive attributes to the supermarket story, the preponderance of the storyline was about the depressing stories behind the supermarkets.
