The world has changed around 79-year-old librarian Millicent Carmichael, a.k.a. Missy. Though quick to admit that she often found her roles as a housewife and mother less than satisfying, Missy once led a bustling life driven by two children, an accomplished and celebrated husband, and a Classics degree from Cambridge. Now, her husband is gone, her daughter is estranged after a shattering argument, and her son has moved to his wife's native Australia, taking Missy's beloved only grandchild half-a-world away.

Ava thought her job as a librarian at the Library of Congress would mean a quiet, routine existence. But an unexpected offer from the US military has brought her to Lisbon with a new mission: posing as a librarian while working undercover as a spy gathering intelligence. Meanwhile, in occupied France, Elaine has begun an apprenticeship at a printing press run by members of the Resistance. It’s a job usually reserved for men, but in the war, those rules have been forgotten. Yet she knows that the Nazis are searching for the press and its printer in order to silence them.

Story
Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

A Kingsolver Treasure
Reviewed: 11-11-18
Years ago, I began reading Kingsolver because she is a Kentucky girl! Soon, it didn't matter where she was from (well, yeah, it does...but you know...), she was a dang good author. I spent many afternoons curled up with one of her books enjoying the rich language and unfolding story. Then, being a fickle reader, I forgot about her stories. Gratefully, this popped up on my "think you will enjoy this" Audible home screen. And Audible was right--I did! I especially enjoyed listening to Kingsolver read her own story! I hope she has narrated others! "Unsheltered" is a complicated story, blending in the woes and joys of a nineteenth century family with those of a twenty-first century family. Their common ground is the house in which they live...a house that was and is falling down around their ears. A couple of famous (or your opinion might deem them infamous) characters show up during the nineteenth century parts of the story...including environmentalists Charles Darwin and Mary Treat. Very interesting combination. #SmallTown#Gritty#Quirky#FemaleProtagonists#HappyEnding

Not up to par for Craig Johnson, in my opinion...way too much violence and (SPOILER ALERT) not enough of the usual characters...Henry, Vic, Ruby...I was not happy, but finished it anyway. Hoping the next one will be as good as his first ones were...this is my first disappointment in Longmire.

Nevada Barr's award-winning mystery series captivates fans with vividly drawn wilderness settings and the resourceful sleuth, middle-aged park ranger Anna Pigeon. Deep South portrays Anna boldly confronting hostile teenagers, suspicious locals, and a resentful "old-boy" network as she struggles to solve a gruesome murder. Anna leaves behind her beloved Mesa Verde to take on a position as district park ranger of the Mississippi Natchez Trace Parkway.

As the title indicates, I am a Barr fan. I don't even know if she has other stories besides the Anna Pigeon series because I am committed to reading all of them before I pursue others. This one is set in Mississippi, where Anna finally has been promoted to "Head Smokey Bear!" Surprised by the culture and the beauty of the state, the author, through Anna, again takes me to a place I have never visited and through her vivid descriptions compels me to visit some day. I can't finish this review without kudos to the narrator, Barbara Rosenblatt...I consider her the perfect voice for Anna.
