The characters are rich and deep, and the story compelling. The narrator took a bit of getting used to, but she became Effie’s voice soon enough.

Story
When Dahlia decided to become a foster mother, she had a few caveats: no howling newborns, no delinquents, and above all, no girls. A harrowing incident years before left her a virtual prisoner in her own home, forever wary of the heartbreak and limitation of a girl’s life. Eleven years after they began fostering, Dahlia and Louie consider their family complete, but when the social worker begs them to take a young girl who has been horrifically abused and neglected, they can’t say no.

I really liked it

there’s something genuine and real about the way we carry our grief and baggage and hope together each day of our lives. This story gets to that—how we love our children, or those we claim as our children, every day. Not because it’s glamorous or because we know how they will turn out, but because they are lovable and worth loving. I admire the imperfections and insecurities of the characters, the way we can see their vulnerability. The odds are stacked against nearly every person in the story, but they find their ways through the challenges. It definitely stirred my feelings, and made me think a lot about what it means to be a family.

This story is a profound reflection upon how our circumstances in life affect our opportunities, and not always in the ways we think. The narrators are superb. I hope you not only take a listen but allow yourself to be moved and to think about what this work is saying about our culture.

Character study with lots of internal action
Reviewed: 05-14-21
If you are hoping for lots of action or drama, you will likely be disappointed because that’s not what this work is about. It’s a study of the human mind and an exploration of human emotions. I enjoyed it very much and found it extremely relatable, which is why I gave it 5 stars. If you don’t want to dive into a human mind, choose something else. As for the other disastrously low ratings I’ve seen for this work, I say it’s unfair to rate a fish on its ability to climb a tree since that isn’t what fish are meant to do.

What a brave, honest, inspiring book
Reviewed: 11-25-18
Anyone who is willing to share this much of herself to attempt to help others deserves 5 stars, but it was a great book too. I’m not a follower of Rachel Hollis, and I’m sure there’s probably common themes across her work. But some things are worth repeating. If you haven’t heard the messages she conveys before, you absolutely positively would benefit from this. If you have heard the messages before, you would still benefit. Not simply as a reminder but because each time you hear them from a different person, you learn something different. I’m so glad I got this book!

Powerful and gripping story

Wow. What an amazing book. The narrator didn’t resonate with me — his girl voices and fake accents came off to me as a bit mocking. It it’s a personal preference I guess. But the story and the writing is amazing. The story itself is amazing but the author brings it to life in vivid detail. It’s long but I didn’t want to put it down.
