About this listen

A hot-blooded new story written by the New York Times best-selling author of Call Me By Your Name and performed by Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife, True Detective).

Mariana has just arrived at the Academy in Italy, where she will spend the next few months on fellowship. That night, over dinner with the other fellows, she meets Itamar. He is handsome and charismatic, and a known Lothario. Although she is aware that an affair with this man may not end well for her, Mariana finds herself falling for Itamar nonetheless. When he abruptly leaves her, Mariana is unmoored. Intent on not giving Itamar the satisfaction of knowing he has destroyed her, Mariana must present a cool façade, until a chance encounter with him in public threatens to leave her completely undone.

By turns incisive and scathing, Mariana is at once a keen psychological portrait and a gripping story of a scorned lover’s descent into despair and rage.

Boring.

I kept waiting for something to happen. The narrator was fine but the story was boring. It was a lot of inner musings and dialogue that never quite crystallized into an interesting plot.

sad and depressing

Wow. An intense look into a broken heart. Not my normal listen as I like the HEA, but this story is so gut wrenching and beautifully written showing the inner workings of a traumatized mind after a bad breakup.

MS Bummer does an excellent job with the material. I never knew one could express dislike longing of unrequited love, boring.

Rambling

I couldn't finish. A story told in ranting format. The actual story is not bad but the former in which it is told is unbearable.

A long long 97 minutes

Psychological thriller? A gripping story??
It a 97 minute long monologue (well performed by Ms Gummer) of a young woman obsessed with a young man after having a brief yet lustful affair with him. He is a player with a ‘use and discard’ mentality where women are involved and she a willing victim. About 60 minutes too long for me.

Disappointing Ending!

The story had me hooked within the first few minutes and I hung on expectantly until the very end....at which point I felt disappointed. The ending was unexpected (which would normally Enhance the overall feelings), but didn’t make sense and was very confusing so in this case it ruined the story for me.

The narrator did an excellent job and was very adept with her tone and delivery and the storyline was intriguing! My only complaint is the ending...

It’s Giving Needy, Manipulative and Stalker Vibes

Pro: Short story, Mamie Gummer as the narrator

Cons: In a nutshell, the main character is obsessively thinking about the end of a 30 day fling with an emotionally unavailable man. She begs, pleads, submits and offers to contort herself in any way that she can to keep his attention. She’s looking to be rescued, begging for him to hold her in his arms again, when she’s already seen him with someone else.

Overall: It’s a sad listen with a “meh” ending.
