It’s a hot and sticky Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Glory has settled into her usual after-church routine, meeting gamblers at the local coffee shop, where she works as a small-time bookie. Sitting at her corner table, Glory hears that her best friend—a nun beloved by the community—has been found dead in her apartment. When the police declare the mysterious death a suicide, Glory is convinced that there must be more to the story and, with her reluctant daughter in tow, launches a shadow investigation in a town of oil tycoons, church gossips, and a rumored voodoo priestess.

Easy listening mystery

I liked that it was set in the South, southern towns, customs and culture. Tasteful mystery, easy to listen to as you fall asleep.

Interesting but very tedious!!
Reviewed: 07-31-19
This book, while factually interesting, is also VERY tedious!! I debated about buying the short version of it but didn't want to miss anything important. However, I do think it should have been edited better & reduced by 1/3 of it's words as it was very redundant. I will be waiting to hear about the upcoming trial. Very interested in how this turns out!

TV series great, but the Book is fabulous listen!
Reviewed: 02-18-18
I loved the Longmire TV series & didn't even consider reading the books until I bought one on sale. The writing is even better, the author's descriptions and observations of real life are so genuine. And the narrator is superb!! I must admit I pictured the characters from the TV series in my head as I listened to the book because I enjoyed them so much, but all of the characters are there! Vic, Ruby, Fergus and especially Walt and best friend Henry Standing Bear. The characters are so true to life. I'm going to have a tough time not "binge listening" to these; I want to buy them slowly and savor each one!

Story
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

This is close to the greatest book I've read. Not only was it written & read but I learned some much about the Senate. College grad but not a poli sci major l learned a lot about how the Senate works AND it was written with just enoug humor to keep me very interested. He is highly intelligent and his previous occupation as pundit & comedian prepared him to be an excellent & very informed Senaror for MINNESSOTTA!

Very dark--
Reviewed: 12-14-16
I bought this on sale, not having read the 1st book in the series. The description was a mystery involving Scotland Yard. But the book was very dark. So much so it wasn't clear to me if it was day or night. The events & details bordered on torture. I greatly enjoy mysteries and thrillers, but this was beyond my taste.

This short novella is quirky, fun and very different from Gabaldon's longer novels. I've read all of her work, this being the last until another novel comes and I love all of her work. But I liked this because it's different, with a little mysticism and a departure from her other wonderful work!!
