Story
Two halves of a whole, Arlo Bishop and I were both unwanted kids brought together by the foster system. Dealing with the aftermath of neglect and abandonment, we grew up side-by-side and found solace in one another. But somewhere along the way, Arlo wanted and needed and loved drugs more. So I broke my own heart to save his. Now, four years later, I’m back in L.A. and face-to-face with my past. I didn’t plan on a second chance, fear of history repeating making it hard to forgive and even harder to forget. But with only one touch, one kiss, I was taken back to where it all started.

I think I could have really enjoyed this book If it had started with a thorough background, and continued chronologically. I just wasn't as invested in the characters as I think I would have been with it starting when Arlo and Frankie were kids.

Caspien Deveraux was poison. It took me years to realise that he hadn't been born like that. He'd been cultivated and nurtured by a careful hand and a bitter heart. When I first met him, he was a bud. One primed to bloom beautifully and deadly. One I should have torn out at the root.

*Little bit of a spoiler alert*
I almost never give audiobooks a full 5 stars; their are only 2 others that I have. This book, this book tore my heart out over and over again before finally putting it back together again. I rarely find queer romance with so much substance, beauty, pain, joy. I was so completely invested in this book that it sort-of broke my heart all over again just by ending. Narration was touching and perfect. I kind of want to start it all over again immediately, but I won't. I'll wait a year or so to listen again (really don't think I'll be able to wait any longer than that, its just too good), so it will be as fresh and new as a book I've already listened to as it can be.

Love a moderately angsty MM novel!
Reviewed: 06-22-24
Sweet Leo falls for somewhat indecipherable Will. Angsty at times, but I love a good book that isn't all sunshine and rainbows and has an actual conflict of sorts, not just missed opportunities and silly miscommunications.

You think you know me. That's the way I want it. Making you feel like we know each other - like we could go grab a beer sometime - is part of my job. Maybe the most vital part. It doesn't hurt that I'm easy on the eyes, single at 35, and born richer than sin. My aesthetic matters much more than it should, but all the better for my worthy cause. And it's a worthy cause. I've made an art out of making you feel good, and my influence makes you want to be good. Good like me. You think you know me, but you don't. Everyone has secrets. Mine could cost me everything.

perfection
Reviewed: 10-28-22
I listen to A LOT of m/m romance. This series and 1 other (More Heat than the Sun by John Wiltshire) are the only 2 that truly deserve 5 stars, imo. Story and narration are both perfection. I do like angsty novels - I think they provide a lot of much-needed depth to the m/m romance genre, so if thats not your thing, this may not be your cup of tea. This one nailed it for me, though. My heart hurt for the MCs, especially Luke, because of the obstacles between them. The HEA of book 2 isn't easy or perfect;, there are still obstacles the MCs will have to work through together. But isn't that more realistic than a perfectly tied-up ending? Book 3 resolves much - but not all - of that. Honestly, I think the 3rd book was kind-of tacked on to the original duet, but I certainly didn't complain about reading more of Vance and Luke's story. Highly recommend.

It was your smile. Your laugh. The color of your eyes. The way you looked at me when no one else was looking. The way you held me. The way you kissed me. It was everything about you I loved. The flattening of that smile. The silence of your laughter. The loss of your lips. The way you left. The way you destroyed it all. The way you destroyed me. Destroyed us. It was everything about you I hated. Everything about you. I wanted. Needed. Hoped for. And that day, you not only broke my heart. You f--king crushed it.

**Spoilers** **TW** Tate is a pathetic cheater.
Reviewed: 10-27-22
Made it a little past halfway through this book. So disgusted I had to stop.
Tate, throughout the 1st half of the book, is nothing but apologies and misery because hes made so many "mistakes" in his life (How is repeatedly cheating "making a mistake " when it requires so much planning, lying, and sneaking around?)
Then, suddenly Tate decides to "crash his lips" (not verbatim) against Ronan's - who is trying to walk away - because he (Tate) has decided that he's punished himself enough and now is going to go after what he wants.
I had to stop there. Tate is nothing but a selfish p.o.s. feeling sorry for himself b/c he has chosen to cheat on his girlfriend, then his boyfriend, then his wife. Repeatedly. And now he is taking what he wants (kissing Ronan) I guess because he still thinks its all about him.
I may or may not finish this, but right now it is just garbage, and sends a really sad message about what truly making amends should look like, and when forgiveness is really earned (hint: should probably take more than a couple of weeks for everything he's done, if ever.)
If I do finish this book and it somehow redeems itself, I'll be happy to change my rating. But right now, I'm just disgusted.

just no

DNF. The "relationship" sparking between Melanie and Dr. Robinson was just too much. I have nothing against "forbidden love" themes, but this was ridiculous. Melanie must have borderline personality disorder or something, and the idea that an experienced therapist not only couldn't diagnose her, but actually found her obsessive infatuation with him attractive somehow.... just nope.
IDK, maybe it got better. I thought about skipping ahead, but didn't.

Story
Ben and Nikolas know that if they were to compare recollections of their life together, they’d remember things very differently. Ben never asks about their time together in the Department because he doesn’t want to hear Nikolas lie. Nikolas never talks about those early years because he can’t afford for Ben to know the truth. For the first time, since their strange meeting in Whitehall 14 years ago, Ben is forced to rethink his claim that nothing Nikolas could ever do would make him stop loving him.

Favorite M/M series ever
Reviewed: 05-05-22
I read quite a lot of M/M novels/series. I listened to the first 8 books in the More Heat than the Sun series in maybe 3-4 days, astonished, not only by how good it was, but that I had somehow not discovered it earlier. Waited for what seemed forever for book 9, which was just as engrossing, fun, angsty, action-packed, and romantic as the rest of the series. I adore these characters- Nik and Ben, yes, but the rest of their piecemeal family, as well. The only thing I don't like about this series is that is has ended.
Oh, and I can't forget to mention Gary Furlong, who brought Nik and Ben and all the rest to life so astoundingly well - his performance of the characters have made them completely unforgettable.
