Story
Maine doesn't like her father. It doesn't help that he's a troll. As in a literal, lives-under-a-bridge troll. When her father is killed, Maine returns home to settle his estate and learns that he wasn't any ordinary troll, but the town hero. Seems trolls can be superheroes, too. When Maine inherited her father's Mantle, she got more than a demonically possessed magical cape that reveals one's weakness. She also inherited several busloads of mythical adversaries. Thanks, Dad!

Really wanted to like this one

This sounded like exactly the type of story I would love. Instead, I spent most of my time irked at how idiotic the main character was. The humor also didn't ring funny to me. Plot and story were a good start, but it fell flat for me.

Story
The Tarot Sequence imagines a modern-day Atlantis off the coast of Massachusetts, governed by powerful Courts based on the traditional Tarot deck. Rune Saint John, last child of the fallen Sun Throne, is backed into a fight of high court magic and political appetites in a desperate bid to protect his ward, Max, from a forced marital alliance with the Hanged Man. Rune's resistance will take him to the island's dankest corners, including a red light district made of moored ghost ships and the floor of the ruling Convocation, where a gathering of Arcana will change Rune's life forever.

A good series maturing well
Reviewed: 05-28-20
This series started off a bit slow in book 1, but it's paying off with the growth of the storyline. The plot is sorta/kinda urban fantasy, but the world is unique and the story is going places I can't entirely predict. The series is unfolding its main characters slowly, revealing more and more of the shadowy corners. I'm pretty excited for the next in the series--this was not a cliff hanger, but the story has an obvious future.
This is a book I wouldn't mind re-reading on paper -- or listening to the audiobook again.

Story
"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

A delightful surprise

I listened to the 43+ hours as fast as I could. This book may tread familiar paths but it has a fresh feel to it and the characters are well developed and the more we learn, the more we want to know. I'm so excited that there's a Volume 2 out there.
As well, I feel that the narrator did an excellent job that added a great deal to my enjoyment of the book - the different character voices were clear and the exciting moments were dramatic with not being overdone.

Having traveled the width of the galaxy to unearth details of its own murderous transgressions, as well as those of the GrayCris Corporation, Murderbot is heading home to help Dr. Mensah - its former owner (protector? friend?) - submit evidence that could prevent GrayCris from destroying more colonists in its never-ending quest for profit. But who's going to believe a SecUnit gone rogue? And what will become of it when it's caught?

Can't get enough
Reviewed: 11-07-18
This book nicely rounds out the series of novellas, going full circle to wrap up the story and illustrating the growth in the character. I'm left still in love with this universe and seeing it from Murderbot's eyes.
Ultimately, I'm left with Oliver Twist's words, 'Please, sir, can I have some more?'

Story
All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

Murderously awesome!
Reviewed: 11-07-18
I just finished re-listening to this story after finishing the series of novellas, and it just got better with the re-listen. The world-building is detailed and intricate, the voice of the main character is wryly humorous and increasingly revealing. Watching Murderbot discover the limits of sentience and autonomy while also figuring out the why of his self-inception makes this one of my new favorite fictional universes.
