Workable story-if not a little over done. Narration great sometimes painful other times.
Reviewed: 12-30-24
The writing was well done if not at sometimes maybe a little floral in many of the descriptions. The pace of the storyline is slow which combined with some of the excessively floral descriptive language left me feeling like I wanted the story to just get on with it already. The weakest point of the book however, something many other reviewers noted, was the narrator. Her accents - particularly Malay, Chinese, and Japanese were really bad. They were all kind of a weird broken-ish whispery English: just really bad. I’m kind of surprised she got green lit to do them. It would have been much better if she’d used her regular narration voice (which was great) or they’d chosen a narrator who had more experience with Asian accents.

Story
Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend clients at the bottom of the legal food chain. It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients. But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face to face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame.

Very Mediocre
Reviewed: 08-26-24
The plot and story was mediocre. Very surprised at the high Goodreads score- was definitely not 4.4 material. And along with all of the other critiques of the intro / outro music at random volumes and intervals- this was so bad. How did a producer approve that decision?

We’ll, that was kind of a waste of time.

I understand it’s not an easy task to write a book on pregnancy for dads. But the advice laid out in this book felt like it was written for a caricatures of stereotypes. So not terribly helpful to me, a dad, living in 2023. And as such this book failed to deliver much of any valuable information and -0- nuance to the topic. I might advise skipping the book and finding some worthwhile videos on YouTube. It’ll be a far more informative experience.

Really not good
Reviewed: 03-11-23
Acceptable read if you want a book written for middle school or high school age readers. I had a hard time finishing this fantastical YA and poorly fictionalized story. The number of 4-5 star reviews is mind boggling. This book is really not good.

Story
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

Story
With accomplished precision and gentle eloquence, Jhumpa Lahiri traces the crosscurrents set in motion when immigrants, expatriates, and their children arrive, quite literally, at a cultural divide. The nine stories in this stunning debut collection unerringly chart the emotional journeys of characters seeking love beyond the barriers of nations and generations.

Great stories. Great performance. Interesting audio mixing.
Reviewed: 12-04-21
The story and performance were excellent. However, the audio mixing was weird/ confusing. The chapters were not each one story but rather randomly placed in the middle of stories with confusing guitar Interludes that didn’t seem to serve any function. That said the stories were very good as was the narrator.

Story mediocre/ narrator painfully bad
Reviewed: 06-28-19
The story was interesting. It wasn’t a cliffhanger and it’d be best if you had a very keen interest in and knowledge of Japan before reading the book. I would suggest reading. The narrator- wow -. I think someone with zero understanding of Japanese might not be the best person to narrate a book about Japan. The pronunciation was distractingly bad, to the point I was confused. Multiple times he would pronounce the same word different ways I thought he was talking about different things.

Story
On March 11, 2011, a powerful earthquake sent a 120-foot-high tsunami smashing into the coast of northeast Japan. By the time the sea retreated, more than eighteen thousand people had been crushed, burned to death, or drowned. It was Japan’s greatest single loss of life since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. It set off a national crisis and the meltdown of a nuclear power plant. And even after the immediate emergency had abated, the trauma of the disaster continued to express itself in bizarre and mysterious ways.

I enjoyed the book. The author did a wonderful job at giving an emotional and vivid account of the tragedy in Japan. The narrator did a very nice job. I appreciated the fact that while he didn’t speak Japanese his pronunciation in no way detracted from the story (not often the case). My small gripe with the story is I wish there’d been more finality or an epilogue to conclude the story.
