Truth and Suffering

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 11-03-07

This book was so beautifully painful, so wondrously wrought and read with such revelation that there have been few books in my lifetime of reading that have touched me so intensely that I had to stop listing at times to ponder what I was experiencing. And no other than Ruby Dee could have possibly read this book in the manner of a revelation to the listener. Stories need to be told and this book is such telling at it's highest. Even Toni Morisson could not have achieved more!

Clarity of Faith

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 06-01-07

Yes I know that my review title could be considered an oxymoron but in the agile articulation of Krista Tippets faith becomes a vibrant challenge to anyone concerned with things spiritual. From the incredible breadth of her knowledge and experience to her pleasing diction I look forward every Thursday to her next show. Her incisive questions never pierce the ear nor heart the callous roughness of the evening news. In a world of 30 second shrill and bombastic journalism she makes you feel that no matter how you approach faith your view of the world is respected as she eagerly chases her guests' thoughts and ideas without guile but with clear sincerity and curiosity. Listening to her read her book is , as all great art, never facile nor superficial but genuine and real and kind. Failing to hear her book is to fail to discover that there are still spiritual beings among us that are questing to become engaged fully and richly in this human experience.

Mailer's Swan Song

Overall
1 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 02-25-07

Let us at least hope this is his swan song(think Sebelius' "Swan of Tuonela" floating down the river to death!). I am sure Mr. Mailer realizes that much of his book is vulgar, venal and scatological. The sexual perversity and explicit speech about all bodily functions not only gets old FAST but clearly over states the Freudian trip through all the stages of humanity's dark sides which is so de regeur in our universities these days especially if it also pays obeisance to queer theory. I lasted down to final 2 hours where a vulgar homosexual/pedophlic scene so churned my stomach that I didn't care anymore where the book was going nor what Mailer in Deiter's pedagogy( the devil who is the narrative voice) was so fatuously attempting to illustrate. Gunter Grass(porno-Grass) move over- literature has a new baD boy/expositor of Vapid vulgarity making Grass' work seem like a child's simple storybook. AH! But I forgot- Mailer has a humpbacked person in his story too! Shame on you Mr. Mailer for plagiarizing another great writer's icon in the name of how depraved Nazi Germany became. Or as another demon with erudite slyness gave away yet another secret if their ilk: our best work is done when we can get a man to sit in a cold room starring at a dead fire!

How about Jane Error

Overall
1 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 02-13-07

I kept trying to plow through to the end BUT I just couldn't do it. Jane Austen may have written this at maybe 10 years old!!! Hence the revised title Jane Error. Oh I recognize that Gothic novels do stumble quite a bit in their plot but this fatuous little piece of writing actually fell into it(the plot that is- alas poor Yorick!)a shame some compassionate soul didn't quickly cover this plot with the grave diggger's dirt!! The characters are stale and static and the plot is required to pick up these poor creatures and move them into the next scene so as not to break the gossamer thread that drags them into a new tableau. Tis a pity that the house and it's inmates did not crumble into a great fire!
