Story
For years, Gary Gulman had been the comedian’s comedian, acclaimed for his delight in language and his bracing honesty. But after two stints in a psych ward, he found himself back in his mother’s house in Boston—living in his childhood bedroom at age forty-six, as he struggled to regain his mental health. That’s where Misfit begins. Then it goes way back. This is no ordinary book about growing older and growing up. Gulman has an astonishing memory and takes the listener through every year of his childhood education, with detailed stories that are in turn alarming and riotously funny.

A+! Gary Gulman bravely and vulnerably weaves his lifelong struggles with mental illness into a hilarious and engaging memoir. Bought this audiobook based on my love his brilliant comedy sketch on how the US state abbreviations were created. His writing is smart, poignant, and thoroughly relatable. This book is an important contribution to the growing body of work that gives hope to young people (and old) who suffer from depression and anxiety. Best book I have listened to in a long while (and I listen to a lot)! Gulman is a national treasure.

The narrative moves at a slow pace but it’s delightful to listen to the stories of the author’s travels, and I learned a lot about tea. She has a soothing voice and would be a great candidate for reading bedtime stories.

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Story
This fresh look at Hollywood's "Queen of Screwball," Carole Lombard, presents a first-ever examination of the events that led to the shocking flight mishap that took her life on the side of a Nevada mountain in 1942. It also provides a day-by-day account of the struggles of Lombard's husband, Clark Gable, and other family, friends, and fans to cope with the tragedy. In effect, having just completed the first sale of war bonds and stamps in the nation following its entry into World War II, Lombard became the first Hollywood star to sacrifice her life in the war.

Great story, overly dramatic narrator
Reviewed: 09-20-20
Compelling narrative that kept my attention the entire time. The description of the crash scene investigation went on a bit longer than I would have preferred. But the only real criticism I have is the narrator’s inflection is overdone and too dramatic, lending an unsophisticated and annoying quality to the audiobook. But overall it was a good listen, particularly the relationship between Lombard, Gable, and their friends.

Heart wrenching memoir, beautifully written. But it was hard for me to get used to the author’s style of reading. She is a trained performance artist, and reads the book as though she were delivering a monologue onstage. To me, this detracted somewhat from the very moving intimacy of the story and lent a forced, overly dramatic quality to her voice, which made it a bit harder to enjoy. It really is a terrific book, but not my favorite listen.

Love Julie Andrews, but the memoir is tedious and uninteresting
Reviewed: 01-03-20
The first part of this book is quite interesting but after she attains initial fame, the story becomes boring and the things she focuses on (other than her kids) seem self-indulgent and hard to relate to. It’s not that the story is hard to understand. But she speaks so theatrically about tiresome and uninteresting details and the explanations of how she and her husband need more money to pay the expenses of their Swiss chalet are difficult to empathize with. I quit listening about half way through because I kept checking the timer for my progress and wishing it were nearly over.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I highly recommend this narrator’s reading of the novel, and the story itself. But many times during listening I found the volume to go in and out, never to the point of being inaudible, but as though someone were turning a volume dial up and down. It was quite distracting.

Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.

I learned a lot of good tips from this book. The narrator’s voice was kind of mechanical and some of the ideas seemed sort of corny, but overall I think it’s worth a listen to get ideas on how to pare down your clutter.
