Story
They're waiting for you. Those four words should have been a warning. They should have filled Violet with dread. But she was so focused on Rafe's disappearance, she forgot. The resistance was supposed to be fighting for a better world. A group of freedom fighters formed during the Monarch War, pushing back against laws that would see everyone enslaved. For a while there, they gave hope. But with power comes corruption. The Society has been quietly amassing the strength and backing to become a real threat, and not everyone wants to use that power for good.

One of my favorite fairytale retellings
Reviewed: 09-07-24
If you enjoy romance, fairytales, magic, and happily ever afters, these are for you. The characters are beautifully written, the world building is superb, and the stories, though based on timeless classics, are fresh and seem almost new. The narrator is excellent and I have relistened to these several times.

Story
They rule my new town, my school, and with more money than God, there’s very little out of their reach. Four gorgeous, perfect, scary boys. There used to be five, but one of them died, leaving a fifth position that I now fill. I didn't ask for this. I didn't want to be part of this billionaire-boys-club. But no one cares about what I want. Sebastian Beckett is the worst of them. Their leader. He draws me in, and strips me of every defense I have. He calls me Butterfly, but it's not a pet name, it's a threat.

Hearing a guy repeatedly praise his own prowess is…meh
Reviewed: 09-03-23
It could have been good, but the things that would have been praise coming from a female towards the main male character just come across as cringeworthy when he says it about himself. And it happens A LOT in this book.

Good story, narration leaves something to be desired
Reviewed: 06-08-23
I enjoy this author quite a bit, but this one was hard to love, I think mostly because the narration wasn’t the best. The narrator often sounded like Siri or Alexa, and had odd inflection and intonation.

Really bad accents
Reviewed: 01-31-23
The story is good, the narration could have been okay if the male narrator could do a Russian accent…he can’t. It sounds like some mix of Middle Eastern and generic Asian, and it would have been better for him to just not do an accent. It really threw off the story and sounded ridiculous.

Narration is terrible
Reviewed: 08-14-21
I loved reading this book (and everything else by Terry Brooks) but the narration on this is bad enough that I wish I could return it. After experiencing so many wonderful narrators through this app, I didn’t really think I would run into this problem, but it was practically unlistenable. I couldn’t even get through 30 minutes of it. Don’t waste your money. Just read the book yourself. Or have Alexa or Siri read it to you from your kindle app. That’s still better.
