About this listen

In a sleepy steel-mill town, the ultimate battle between Good and Evil is about to begin....

Sinnissippi Park, in Hopewell, Illinois, has long hidden a mysterious evil, locked away from humankind by powers greater than most could even imagine. But now the malevolent creatures that normally skulk in the shadows of the park grow bolder, and old secrets hint at a violent explosion.

The brewing conflict draws John Ross to Hopewell. A Knight of the Word, Ross is plagued by nightmares that tell him someone evil is coming to unleash an ancient horror upon the world. Caught between them is 14-year-old Nest Freemark, who senses that something is terribly wrong but has not yet learned to wield the budding power that sets her apart from her friends.

Now the future of humanity depends upon a man haunted by his dreams and a gifted young girl - two souls who will discover what survives when hope and innocence are shattered forever....

Great story

I loved the beginning weaving of a great story. I’m glad I went back to the original book.

The GoAt

I was introduced to TB when Lucas asked him to write phantom menace. I immediately had to devour everything written by Brooks. Running with the demon was my starting point, and from there, I was hooked!!
Yeah Lucas blew it with JarJar, but he knocked it out of the park picking Terry Brooks. I’m still a huge fan after all these years and it was a real treat getting to listen back to where it all started for me with this novel.
At first I was a little unsure if I would like Mr. Wilson narrating, but he immediately proves his worth with a very inflective tone moving between characters. Great read and a great listen! Highly recommend.

Great tale, brings me back to my youth

I remember reading the Sword of Shannara trilogy when I was young and enjoying it immensely, even though the initial novel reminded me a lot of Tolkien. Picked up this book recently and was immediately pulled back into the heady days of the summers of my youth. A great blend of characters, settings, small towns, good versus evil and make believe "magic". George Wilson's narration is excellent, bringing the characters to life and making the story sound believable. Five stars.

Narration is only tolerable at 1.2x speed

What is it with Terry Brooks' books having terrible narrators? Either they put ridiculous emphasis on everything or they are terribly monotonous.

The narrator of this series is absolutely abysmal. The long pauses, painfully slow speech, and absolutely misophonia inducing swallowing made listening to this book a chore at points. However, if you speed your player up to 1.2x, the monotony of his voice and long pauses become almost normal speech patterns, actually.

I enjoyed the book itself. I read the Sword of Shannara series when I was very young, and it was nice to see the beginnings of the world I loved then unfold. The story was a bit predictable, but it's meant to be young fiction, right? Not remarkable literature.

very hard to get into it

I didn't like the narrator and the story dragged on and on at first and most of the story I felt was more like a teen read

Easy listening

At first the voice actor doing different voices for the different characters was a bit annoying, but later it really helped to identify people speaking when the author didn't specifically state who was speaking.
