Story
The idyllic town of Baxter, Michigan, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. Katie LeClair to settle down after years toiling in medical school - until the murder of a patient shattered the peace she had found. Now on the mend and balancing the responsibilities of a new house and the joys of a new romance, Katie is finally ready to start enjoying life. But danger arrives just as the town is gearing up for its annual Halloween festival-and once again, this doctor-turned-sleuth will have to unmask a killer in their midst. Trouble comes in threes this Halloween.

In what world!?
Reviewed: 08-15-23
Why is no one talking about the fact that this is a doctor trying to be a detective!? It’s weird.
The storyline would be fine IF she was actually part of the police force rather than a busy body doctor. Seems like this town has pretty inadequate police when the local GP is solving all the murder cases. It just all seems a little far fetched to me. Narration was its only saving grace.

Why so many metaphors!?
Reviewed: 05-06-23
This is written in such an annoying way. I feel like the author had a certain word quota to meet and instead of adding to the dull storyline she just inserted 1000 metaphors as the main characters inner monologue and spoken word - so annoying.
Also…the narrators Scottish accent is terrible. Halfway through and about to pull the pin. It’s a snooze fest!

Story
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Misleading
Reviewed: 04-15-23
I was really excited to get stuck into what I thought would be a great ‘escaping cult’ true story but was sadly left very bored. I kept listening in the hopes it would improve but it certainly didn’t. While I admire her for leaving the cult she ended up falling into a very cult-like form of Christianity and the last 1/3 of the book felt like a religious push. The narration was very average, someone else summed it up perfectly as like a monotone reading from a teenagers diary. If you want ‘gripping your seat cult story’ I’d pass on this one!

Reviewed: 01-30-23
Halfway through and giving up. It’s just so drawn out and boring. I swear the story is moving at a snails pace and I’m not really listening now, it’s just background noise. Accents often sound off, more Scottish than Irish and the English narrators American accent is terrible. Love an Irish love story but this is not it!

Story
Best friends Hero and Sunday are holidaying in New York when Sunday persuades the normally conservative Hero to don a siren-red wig and the persona of Lola, a do-anything-anywhere-anytime trapeze artist. Disguised as Lola, Hero crosses paths - and a whole lot more - with gorgeous Oscar. Sparks fly, but Hero can't admit to Oscar that she's not who he thinks she is.

Just a bit of a snore to be honest!

I really didn’t like the narration of this book at all. She sounded so childish & the way she made all the male characters sound pompous cheapened it. I had high hopes at the beginning, the prologue sucked me in but the actual story was just so long and nothing overly interesting happened. Glad it was a freebie!

Don’t be fooled by the bad reviews for this book. I read them and was put off listening for a long time but finally decided to give it a go. I literally could not stop listening. One of my favourite books I e ever read/listened to. I finished it in tears with so much respect and understanding for women in domestic abuse relationships. Colleen, I commend you for writing about something so close to home. I cannot wait to listen to the second book!

This book started out okay and the plot sounded great but it absolutely dragged. There were too many unnecessary twists and turns and the last half of the book really dragged. It felt like the author had no clear direction for the storyline. It also really annoyed me how the narrator changed the way she pronounced names throughout the book too. Glad it was a freebie!

Needs a *Trigger Warning
Reviewed: 02-24-22
I’ve really enjoyed this book, it’s a beautifully written story, and I was definitely left wanting to read the next but I strongly feel that Audible needs to have a Trigger warning. As a mother who’s thankfully never suffered from infant loss or stillbirth I can only imagine how a mother who had lost a child would feel reading this book without knowing it was to head that way.
