Story
In medical school, Matt McCarthy dreamed of being a different kind of doctor - the sort of mythical, unflappable physician who could reach unreachable patients. But when a new admission to the critical care unit almost died his first night on call, he found himself scrambling. Visions of mastery quickly gave way to hopes of simply surviving hospital life, where confidence was hard to come by and no amount of med school training could dispel the terror of facing actual patients.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I am an RN and have worked with interns and residents. I find it interesting to listen to their journey as we share some of the same fears. Making a mistake in our field can be tragic..therefore, learning and practicing can be extremely stressful. It can definitely humble you.

To say that Augusten Burroughs has lived an unusual life is an understatement. From having no formal education past third grade and being raised by his mother’s psychiatrist in the seventies to enjoying one of the most successful advertising careers of the eighties to experiencing a spectacular downfall and rehab stint in the nineties to having a number one bestselling writing career in the new millennium, Burroughs has faced humiliation, transformation and everything in between.

I love Augusten Burroughs. He is extremely insightful, but then again, how could he not be? Those who have been through trials and tribulations are more interesting people, have more insight and wisdom. I found it to be thought provoking.

In 2009, Susannah Cahalan woke up in a strange hospital room strapped to a bed, under guard, and unable to move or speak. Her medical records - from a month-long hospital stay of which she had no memory - reported psychosis, violence, and dangerous instability. Yet, only weeks earlier she had been a healthy, ambitious twenty-four-year-old, six months into her first serious relationship and a sparkling career as a cub reporter

This story is great. I have an auto immune disease that attacks skin and muscle, it came on suddenly when I was 31. I was ill for 2 1/2 years before I found a drug that put me into remission. I've received the IVIG therapy that this lady did. It was interesting for me because I could relate with that aspect of her story but also because I am a nurse and I love learning about illnesses that I have never heard of. I would recommend to a friend.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

This is a remarkable story that will strike your soul. I usually am hesitant of any books longer than 8 or 9 hours, but I kept wanting more of this one. It held my interest completely and I looked forward to my 35 minute commute to work. It also gave me a greater understanding and respect for my father who served in the Vietnam war. My grandfathers brother, still to this day, will not speak about his experience in WWII. It is too painful for him. I have a greater respect for him as well.

Story
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

I love this book, I didn't want it to end. It offers valuable information on communication and how loving dogs can alter certain hormones and neurotransmitters that enable us to feel pleasure and bond with them. I feel bad for people who don't connect with animals, especially dogs, since their contribution in our lives can be absolutely priceless.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The details were extensive but amazingly didn't seem to be too much but instead gave an intimate knowing of the characters and what they were feeling and going through.

Anna Bloom is depressed - so depressed that her parents have committed her to a mental hospital with a bunch of other messed-up teens. Here, she meets a roommate with a secret (and a plastic baby), a doctor who focuses way too much on her weight, and a cute, shy boy who just might like her. But wait! Being trapped in a loony bin isn’t supposed to be about making friends, losing weight, and having a crush, is it?

I am very much not a religious person, I prefer to listen to spiritual books such as Eckhart Tolle or Wayne Dyer. Although this book does have a good message, I was quite turned off by the bible quotations that seemed to come along literally every minute. But, like I said, the overall message was good.
