You know a benefit of an actual paper magazine or newspaper? There are articles in there you might not have chosen but you glance at them and you take a chance.

This is how I found "Being Human."

It's not a genre I read/listen to much so I was hesitant but I thought I'd give it a chance.

I was ready to find fault and just turn it off but as I walked the aisles of the supermarket something happened that I realized meant I was into the story.

I forgot what I was in that aisle for. I forgot my shopping list.

I stared blankly into the fruits and vegetables and listened to how this non-human was masquerading as a human in a school and trying to integrate.

If you're on the fence of digging into Samantha Bell's storytelling, give her an hour of your time, head to the supermarket but one tip?

Write down your shopping list.

My 13-year-old son wanted it to keep going!

I had just flown 11 hours and my 13-year-old son and I were relaxing on the couch trying to fend off jetlag.

"Hey, want to listen to an audiobook with me? It's fantasy."

"Sure."

We were enjoying the story but we were called in by my sister for dinner.

"We can finish it later," I suggested.

"No, just a little more," he pleaded.

The beauty of audiobooks is that you can share them in real-time. I would never have known my son liked fantasy had we not listened to this story together.

I liked that it was short so we could have an idea of the characters and continue when the author continues the series (we hope!).

Enjoy it together with someone else, see what happens. :-)

Chris Fox is a reliable, long-term, experienced author who has sold many books in both fiction and nonfiction.

One thing I very much respect about his perspective is that he is looking at the long game. He’s not so interested in the short term revenue but rather the bigger picture over your author career.

As with any book that contains action items, you’re going to get more out of this book if you actually do them. Do yourself a favor and do your homework.

If you love marketing, you’ll love this book.

If you don’t love marketing so much, you’ll be happy to know that all you need to do for your marketing education is read this book.

If you hate marketing, this is the book that will elevate you to no longer hate marketing.

I am aware that this book is called This is Marketing but it’s applicable to so many fields in so many ways that just a marketing title is possibly too narrow.

However, if I had paid attention at all in the book, I know to start with the smallest viable audience and only later expand once you have mastered that level.

See, you learned something already by reading this review and you haven’t even started the book yet. See how easy that was?

I can especially recommend the audiobook version.

Brené Brown reminds us that she was also at a starting point in the past and that, as much as we might think otherwise, she still struggles and can relate to the challenges that we mere mortals face today.

I have to admit that it took me several months to finish the audiobook as I found it quite long. However, each time I came back to it, I found some goodness.

If you're a successful indie author who's doing everything right, royalties shower your inbox daily, and your author life is an dream, you don't need to read this book.

If you're not quite there yet, it's a good idea to read this book (or better yet, listen to it).

In fact, even if you're thinking of becoming an author (whether indie or not), this is a good place to start.

Nope, it won't go into details about book marketing. It only touches on topics like advertising and costs. It skims over what other books go into depth on. But that's the point: this book is about mindset.

It's what you need BEFORE you begin "all of that other stuff" (e.g. writing books, marketing, making a business out of it).

It's a few hours on Audible and these few hours should "earn" you hundreds of hours in free time when you can count your royalties and analyze your ROI. Oh, and write more books.

I had an hour.
I wanted to be scared, thrilled, entertained.
I wanted to see how "The Big Boy" authors did a 1-hour-long short story.

I listened for an hour, didn't want it to stop.
I actually wanted more, but was also happy it was a finished story.
I was scared, thrilled, and entertained.
I loved the narrator. He was perfect for the story!

So that's how the big boys do it!

Would you listen to The Black Widow again? Why?

Yes, to see how the author builds up to the big twist.

What other book might you compare The Black Widow to and why?

Maybe something by Stephen King: horror and suspense and ... a big twist at the end.

Which character – as performed by Holly Holt – was your favorite?

Brenda!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

That twist at the end. I wasn't expecting it and it was delicious!

Any additional comments?

I hope that the author also writes some longer works. Although I really enjoy these short, while-I'm-walking-the-dog stories, something like this story I could dig into a while longer!

The honeymoon included $10,000 cash spending money plus other items that sounded so good that it might be hard to believe it’s true. When things usually sound too good to be true, they often are. The two main characters in the story have to find out if too good really is true.

Would you listen to Painkillers for Heartache again? Why?

Yes, but more to listenly more closely to the narrator. He couldn't have been all of those voices, could he have been!?

What other book might you compare Painkillers for Heartache to and why?

Maybe something from Stephen King: deceitfully safe and pleasant until the horror kicks in.

What does Andrew Clark bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

So I'm not even sure if that was just one guy there, but if that was really only his voice, then he's a pro at voice imitations. I thought there were at least three voices in there.

Who was the most memorable character of Painkillers for Heartache and why?

Old Angus mostly because he sounded the scariest.

Any additional comments?

I don't know if this is "allowed" from a narrator, but because he (or THEY!) did such a good job of the different characters' voices, I didn't need the "Jennifer said" lines in there because it was clear that it was Jennifer speaking. Sometimes it was a little jarring to hear Jennifer's voice and then the "narrator's" voice come in to say "Jennifer said."

But if it's really just that one guy? He's great.
