About this listen

Can a grim reaper survive junior year?

As a Reaper, it is Mary’s duty to guide the dead to the afterlife. For the past 50 years, her assignment has been to retrieve souls in terrifying war zones. When a simple mission pushes Mary to her breaking point, she is banished to the mortal world.

When everything she’s ever known about humanity is turned upside-down, Mary is forced to leave her past behind and open her heart. She realizes that all Humans aren’t as terrible as she believed, but some are much worse than she ever imagined.

For fans of Modern Monsters, this is a debut young adult contemporary story that shines a light on the dark side of youth. Becoming Human is a full-length novel that tackles a number of teen issues such as dating, homosexuality, bullying, and depression from an outsider’s perspective.

A Must Listen

Becoming Human by Samantha Bell is a YA contemporary story that I listened to on audio narrated by Taylor Barton.

This is the second book of Samantha’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I loved this spin on a Grim Reaper becoming human and tackling life as teen.

Taylor did an amazing job on the narration. She really knows how to bring a story to life.

Great Read!

I offered to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. Especially when books have a single narrator required to speak with different voices for multiple characters. Most cannot do it without having some errors where they use the wrong 'voice' for the wrong character. Taylor Barton does a great job in narrating this book! It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn't have any issues distinguishing between characters.

As to the story, I am not one to give a lot of specific story details since I feel you should read the story for that. Becoming Human is a new twist on the reaper stories, which makes for a very interesting read (or listen). It includes interesting characters and great plot twists that will keep you listening long into the night. You won't be disappointed!

I wasn't expecting to be drawn into the story ...

You know a benefit of an actual paper magazine or newspaper? There are articles in there you might not have chosen but you glance at them and you take a chance.

This is how I found "Being Human."

It's not a genre I read/listen to much so I was hesitant but I thought I'd give it a chance.

I was ready to find fault and just turn it off but as I walked the aisles of the supermarket something happened that I realized meant I was into the story.

I forgot what I was in that aisle for. I forgot my shopping list.

I stared blankly into the fruits and vegetables and listened to how this non-human was masquerading as a human in a school and trying to integrate.

If you're on the fence of digging into Samantha Bell's storytelling, give her an hour of your time, head to the supermarket but one tip?

Write down your shopping list.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would

I enjoyed this audiobook. I didn't realize it's a YA book and I'd say it's best suited to teenagers. Still, I enjoyed the story--it's well-written and I got involved with the characters and really wanted things to work out for them. The authors does a good job with the main character and her journey as a human. You could feel she isn't human, but she is... which was good. It made it feel that she really was a reaper that changed into a human and not just a teenage girl.

Wow! Love story with a beautiful twist.

I just finished this book and I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. This is a beautiful love story with a very unique twist. The storyline from the perspective of a reaper is well thought out and explored. I didn't want this book to end! I need more!

The narrator's voice was perfect for this story!

My favorite part of the book is the ending. Wow! Just Wow!

Such an interesting Grim Reaper book

I was glad to check out this book, I had never read a book that the main theme was about grim reaper, and especially not a 16 year old girl as one.

Mary, after reaping so many souls breaks and is sent to Earth as a human. She learns so much about humans, the good side and the horrible side.

Narrator does a great job on the voices, giving each one their own special tone, never wavering or missing which character is which tone.
