About this listen

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • When we deny our stories, they define us. When we own our stories, we get to write the ending.

Don’t miss the five-part HBO Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart!

Social scientist Brené Brown has ignited a global conversation on courage, vulnerability, shame, and worthiness. Her pioneering work uncovered a profound truth: Vulnerability—the willingness to show up and be seen with no guarantee of outcome—is the only path to more love, belonging, creativity, and joy. But living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall.

It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. As a grounded theory researcher, Brown has listened as a range of people—from leaders in Fortune 500 companies and the military to artists, couples in long-term relationships, teachers, and parents—shared their stories of being brave, falling, and getting back up. She asked herself, What do these people with strong and loving relationships, leaders nurturing creativity, artists pushing innovation, and clergy walking with people through faith and mystery have in common? The answer was clear: They recognize the power of emotion and they’re not afraid to lean in to discomfort.

Walking into our stories of hurt can feel dangerous. But the process of regaining our footing in the midst of struggle is where our courage is tested and our values are forged. Our stories of struggle can be big ones, like the loss of a job or the end of a relationship, or smaller ones, like a conflict with a friend or colleague. Regardless of magnitude or circumstance, the rising strong process is the same: We reckon with our emotions and get curious about what we’re feeling; we rumble with our stories until we get to a place of truth; and we live this process, every day, until it becomes a practice and creates nothing short of a revolution in our lives. Rising strong after a fall is how we cultivate wholeheartedness. It’s the process, Brown writes, that teaches us the most about who we are.

YES

Rising Strong is an excellent follow-up to Daring Greatly. For those of us beginning to explore our vulnerability, it's a bit of a surprise to discover the supremely uncomfortable highs and lows and new intensity of feeling that accompany vulnerability. Support along the way is a must. You'll find it here.

Tricked by the title, but enriched in the end.

What did you love best about Rising Strong?

First off I'm an avid watcher of TED talks, though somehow I managed to miss any and every reference to Brene Brown. In fact until I make the purchase of this book (Thinking it was really about something else), I hadn't heard of her at all.

That being said I took a lot a value away from this book. By nature I usually do a lot of research on a book before I purchase it and try to stay away from research titles that are usually heady and make me wish i'd bought the printed version along with a highlighter.

I won't be very detailed in the review because I think you need to get the book so I will not try to summarize the materiel. I'll simply summarize what I got from it and my experience listening to the context.

Thanks to the love for story that Mr. Brown and I both share I remembered most of her points on the first listen... Also having just lost someone close to me it helped me to recognize some things about myself that I'd never even considered as well as how I am personally handling the adjustment process.
In addition to that the book has done a great job in helping me better frame moments of frustration in my daily life and truly see things from the other person's perspective. (As a business owner we can sometimes fail to do this with our employees)

I only really had one consideration, and one problem with the book and both are small.

First, for male reader's there's a section near the end (Around the last chapter) that references points clearly pointed towards a female audience. But this is very minimal, and male readers like myself should not be turned off by these very brief moments. This is simply mentioned as a considerable note to overlook on your quest to finish the book.

Second, Mrs Brown reads her book very slowly in my opinion. I found that I was able to easily listen at the 1.5x speed, and one that seemed normal cranked it up to 2x speed near the end of the book.

I do suggest this book to just about anybody. Like anything else some won't enjoy, she uses a little more language than I like for this type of book, but I think the information could turn out to be very enriching, and a great personal life reference.

A deep message straight in my soul...

I love listening to her. Her storytelling skills are phenomenal. The messages this book carries are powerful and have inspired me to, as Dr . Brene says, " Contribute more than criticize in my life". Thank you Dr. Brene...thank you for being brave and sharing your research and insights.

Her books have and still are transforming the way I see the world, myself and the people around me. As I said in the title of this review....a deep message straight to the soul.

Applicable and relevant!

This is my 3rd Brene Brown and this was my favorite! I learned so much that I can apply to my life and relationships. The author narrates her own book I enjoyed hearing it in her own voice. My 21 year old daughter has purchased and is reading it now too... I am especially excited for her to learn these skills and tools at such a young age! This is a wonderful book everyone should learn these tools!

Life Changing!

After my mother was taken suddenly and prematurely by pancreatic cancer, and my second marriage was over, it was time to heal, reflect, forgive myself for my mistakes but not forget my resilience and personal victories along the way, and to RISE up and start the next chapter of my life. This book was a game changer…a life changing read that opened my eyes and my heart and gave me permission to be my REAL, imperfect, wholehearted self.

As a girl born and raised in Austin, I love it even more that Brené is a 5th generation Texan who wrote and narrated the Audible version of the book. It has been a LIFE CHANGING read for me. I have learned more from this book about LIFE, LOVE, FAILURE, HEARTBREAK, and RISING UP after it, overcoming the shame and fear, not judging others (because they are doing the best they can). I have learned how to live BRAVELY, but from a place of empathy, and not being afraid to show my vulnerability. I have learned to set firm boundaries and not be afraid to ask for what I need (so I don’t build up resentment). Owning who I TRULY am, is the best way to live. I couldn’t recommend a book more. Just awesome!

Great Book, Great Story, Great Research

I don’t know if I agree with everything in the book but Brené Brown made a masterpiece. From what I could tell she is well qualified and did her research, there is a lot to learn here and it’s a very enjoyable story!

Brene being brilliant

Practical and vulnerable, rich with personal stories and compilations of well-curated data, Brene once again gives us a roadmap for how we can move towards a more enriched experience of life, this time specifically after we've taken a tumble. Rising strong addresses a seemingly minute portion of the "man in the arena" quote, but one that is a total game-changer. I loved this book. I will revisit it often. I am very grateful for her work.
