Just ok, even a bit boring
Reviewed: 07-15-24
I had high hopes for this story, but I felt like it had no real plot. The characters were likable, but so badly I wanted a little more depth or suspense or just something more. It fell flat for me and was almost boring. So many things were not explained. I’m sad to say I was disappointed by the storyline. It had real potential!

So when her father’s pocket watch is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, especially when the local authorities prove incompetent. Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. Very cute story

This book left me smiling! Such a sweet and romantic story, full of a few twists and turns at the end I didn’t see coming. The heroine drove me a little crazy through the book, her actions and decisions weren’t logical to me, but the hero was dashing and charming all the way through.

Story
The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

It’s hard to imagine what people truly endured and survived through during WWII. This book made it all seem so real, and so heartbreaking. The human spirit is a miracle, and this brings it all full circle to what is truly important in life! I love the characters in this book. What a wonderful memorial to those who (in Isabelle’s words) “made it!”

She has never known her mother, who died when Elsie was a baby, and she longs for a close, loving relationship with her father. He, however, has sent her off to be raised at Roselands, his brother's Southern plantation, where her teacher, Miss Day, harshly criticizes her and her cousins tease her relentlessly.

It got a little better…
Reviewed: 10-09-23
This book was hard to make it through because Elsie was so mistreated and sad for most of the book. I’m glad she and her papa finally progressed to a good relationship, but most of the story was more negative than I like to listen to! (I was on a road trip so I kept listening, otherwise I think I would have turned it off!)
