About this listen

Elsie Dinsmore is an endearing 8-year-old girl with several bewildering problems. She has never known her mother, who died when Elsie was a baby, and she longs for a close, loving relationship with her father. He, however, has sent her off to be raised at Roselands, his brother's Southern plantation, where her teacher, Miss Day, harshly criticizes her and her cousins tease her relentlessly.

As Elsie learns to handle her problems, she begins to learn more about herself. And as her faith in her heavenly father grows, she learns what it means to be a child of God. The result is a story that inspires and challenges, and listeners will delight in how Elsie comes to depend completely upon faith in God for the peace and happiness she seeks.

A very GOOD girl who thinks she's naughty in 1867

Any additional comments?

According to Wikipedia, this book was written in 1867 and thus is more true to the picture of that time than a story written in modern times. Amazingly, the dialogue is often reminiscent of that in early movies three quarters of a century later.
Elsie very much takes refuge in a thorough rooting in Christian teachings and turns the other cheek as she is obviously wronged often. Her young, inexperienced father returns after years away and treats her sternly since he has been meanly informed she is a "bad" child by his step-mother. It takes long for him to observe more correctly, yet the strictness continues. This is a long series of books and I find it interesting enough to continue.
Anna Fields is an excellent narrator and performer. She made the characters live.

A Most Excellent Book!

A most excellent book!! I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great story! The characters jump off the "pages", and the narration is very clear and enjoyable to listen to.

Elsie's faith is inspiring, and though the trials she goes through are heart-wrenching, she never loses her faith in God. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, and now my children are listening to it, and enjoing it, as well. I'm sure they will learn a lot from Elsie's story.

An enjoyable book but a bit juvenile.

Do you like the challenge and audiobook to portray from a very young child two grown adults to elderly person. However Elsie Dinsmore‘s voice I found to be annoying. And the mention of her crying all the time tearfully enduring ridicule and teasing too constant. I found myself hoping that her character with age and the necessity for her Mickey Mouse this child’s voice would change to a more pleasing tone.

Great book. Fall in love with little Elsie

I laughed, i cried, i couldnt stop listening. I was previewing this book for my kids and got 'sucked in'. As a parent, its a tough listen at times but everything works itself out to some degree. What a wonderful book. Cant wait to listen to the next in the series! And, cant wait till my kids have all listened, too so we can all talk about it! Plus- the history in this book is interesting and enjoyable as well.
