Story
Hidden beneath her British reserve, Edwina has a secret: she’s finished her novel and is bravely mailing the manuscript to a publisher. Beryl also has a secret: as thanks for solving a case, the American adventuress has been gifted an airplane. After swooping over the fields and hedgerows of Walmsley Parva, livestock scattering beneath her, she flamboyantly lands the plane on the village green, prompting a startled Edwina to consider a stiff gin fizz. Beryl’s aircraft is not the only disruption of village peace. Miss Dinsdale, a psychic medium, has started holding séances.

Narration was Difficult
Reviewed: 04-05-24
I have really enjoyed this series so far and was excited to hear Clayton’s story. However, they changed the narrator for book 4 and I was extremely disappointed. This narrator reminds me of the most high born, pretentious lady who has ever spoken. She sounds like Cressida Cowper in Bridgerton. Her voice has an airy quality that makes it difficult to listen to and is so soft in places it’s hard to understand. I couldn’t return the book because I didn’t use a credit to purchase, but after only 15 minutes I couldn’t continue to listen either.

London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love. Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture.

Good story, weak narration.
Reviewed: 10-06-21
The Duke’s “deep” voice did not come across at all, and I often confused his words with that of the women due to lack of differentiation. The main female character sounded more like she was 12 than 21 and it made it difficult to appreciate any of the romance. Overall, the story was good and I enjoyed it, but would like to hear more variation in the character voices.

Story
The cold, precise Duke of Montford demands things his way: neatly ordered, in place, and adhering closely to the rules. So he is furious when he learns that the tenant of his ducal estate has been dead for a year, and a stranger has been running the Honeywell business - which, by contract, is now Montford's. When he arrives in Yorkshire to investigate, he discovers that the estate is being run by an unruly, tomboyish woman - and a bluestocking at that!

"Cozy" murders in historical settings. Nice descriptions of period items and customs, such as clothing, hair styles, etiquette etc make you fell as though you are. Good character development. I hope the author continues this series, I only have one left to read!

They didn’t solve anything!!
Reviewed: 12-14-19
First of all, the narrator kept switching between the name Emilie and Amelia, sometimes in the same sentence and it was obnoxious. Pick one. While the story itself was interesting, I felt cheated at the end. They didn’t solve the main story line and there were still so many questions. I’m disappointed!

British?
Reviewed: 11-27-19
I downloaded this book on the recommendation of reviewers in an online book club. They swore it had a great British narrator and a decent story. No way! If that accent is British, so am I! It sounded more like someone from Manhattan mixed with a little West Virginia. I couldn’t even decide if I liked the story or not because I was so disappointed with the narration. However, sex with a complete stranger in the first chapter is not my cup of tea. I guess I should’ve known better based on the title.

Intense Read!

This was such a good book, but what an emotional roller coaster! Ella Carey is so skilled at recreating history and pulling readers into the past. I truly love reading her books, and I'm always immediately immersed. Her ability to showcase these amazing women and their valor, is outstanding! I found myself laughing and crying right along with them. Overall, it's a powerful and positive story, that emphasizes these brave women, the power of friendship, and the sorrow of loss. I am quite grateful to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing, and Ella Carey for giving me the chance to read and review her book. In terms of performance, I was a bit disappointed with the reader. She took a long time to get into a flow of reading and seemed rather flat. Her portrayal of the "current" characters made them seem old, when in reality they would have only been in their 50's.
