Great Worldbuilding, but deceptively long and slow

The chapters felt like they could’ve been split up much more than they would, it kind of felt like they were droning on, and once we did get a change of pace, it was the exact same.

Also, I can understand a slowburn, but if your spicy book is only going to be *spicy* at the very end, then you need them to actually interact one-on-one for me to feel like it’s worth it to keep going.

Also also, I don’t know if it was a choice, from the director, but the inner monologues and dialogue were done in different voices even though they were from the same characters perspectives, and it really took me out.

A book that says what we’ve all been thinking, Christmas nowadays kind of sucks. And so does something else, heyo!

The summary and opening of the book promised two sexy sugar daddies, and then a throuple situation. Instead, I got a romance between Katie and Karl, and Rick was just there sometimes, acting like the best friend that consoles them and gives advice rather than being an active member of the group.

I don’t know if it’s because it was written by two different people or what, but Jamie and Wes felt like the exact same person, and there didn’t seem to be a lot of growth on either part. I normally love male romance novel characters written by women, but I didn’t love either of them. If I had to describe them, I would say they’re how someone imagines what an early 2000’s straight frat guy would be like if he was gay, hooking up with one of his bros.
The sex was well written and paced well, but Wes, who voiced most of them, continued with his flat even tone for each, and conveyed no emotion for them.
The way they talked about women and sex with them when alone together kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but Jamie’s scenes with Holly were very sweet.
For all of Wes’s talk about dealing with stigma and not wanting that for Jamie, he didn’t seem to put much thought or research time into where he would be moving, which would’ve saved so much stress for everyone.
Finally, and the main reason I’m rating it 3 stars and not lower, is that it has a lovely ending. From the description of the second book, it sounds like they’re still keeping their relationship a secret, but ignoring future installments, this book ends with both of them happy in their careers, living together, and with Wes being accepted by Jamie’s family.

There’ll always be more redeeming than negative qualities in a SJM book, so you’ll never hear me saying anything bad about them. Evan’s still killing it as a storyteller, so I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment.

This is my second time reading one of Samantha Shannon’s books, and compared to“Priory of the Orange Tree,” this was much easier to digest. It is one of those books that you have to get through a chunk of to really love it, but now I have, and I do. 😁

Greenwood simultaneously lived the dream and kept everything down to earth. I had an idea on what she would be covering, and was given that and more I hadn’t ever considered. This is an anthem for all enthusiasts of escapism.

The hypocrisy “The Shadow” exudes was at first off putting, and made me question whether it was acceptable for me to like this. But the prose, especially in Addie’s sections, were amazing, and once it started getting spicy it became a feast I couldn’t wait to devour.
