Truth is definitely stranger than fiction. What an intriguing story with all kinds of interesting characters. I’m glad she was able to accomplish something even if it wasn’t her original goal. May she and her mom find peace.

Story
Paint your toes. Pick up the wrong coffee and bagel order. Drive from Brooklyn to Jersey in traffic so slow you want to tear your hair out. It’s amazing all the useless things I can accomplish while on hold for three hours with customer service. Three hours when I should be getting the Date-in-a-Box website ready to launch at the big business expo in a few days. Except my shiny new website is glitching, and my inner rage-monster is ready to scorch some earth...when he finally picks up. Not the robot voice I expected but a real live human named Kal.

Story
It was supposed to be fun. A relaxing trip to a remote mountain retreat where there’s no phone reception. Three couples, friends since high school, are looking forward to a weekend of drinking, reminiscing and flirting. When someone suggests swapping partners, it doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. The lights will be switched off, for privacy. It’s not really cheating if you don’t know who you were with, right? But when the lights come back on, one of the men is dead. No-one can agree who was in which bedroom with whom.

I’m the oldest of all the Dixon boys. Yeah, that family. And, yeah, that Dixon. The one with a notorious temper and devastating fists. My family tried everything short of giving up on me, but there’s only one person who can calm me. Savannah Riley Dixon. Girl next door. My best friend. Sweeter than honey and stronger than whiskey. And the answer to my enraged soul.

When Misty was six years old, her family started to live and dress like the Amish. Misty and her sister were kept as slaves on a mountain ranch where they were subjected to almost complete isolation, sexual abuse, and extreme physical violence. When Misty reached her teens, her parents feared she and her sister would escape and took them to an Amish community where they were adopted and became baptized members. Misty was devastated to once again find herself in a world of fear, animal cruelty, and sexual abuse.

Sad, tragic, not well written.

I’m not trying to diminish or excuse any kind of abuse by anyone, it is never OK. I applaud anyone courageous enough to come forward to out abusers. However, this story has a lot of inconsistencies. She really wasn’t Amish, her stepfather and mother were English pretending to be Amish. Real Amish do not accept government assistance for any reason. She lived amidst the Amish community. There are abusive people from every walks of life, every type of religion. I feel the Author is trying to portray them as being worse than everyone else. I also take the Author as a “I did it all by myself” and not really crediting those around her that supported her getting out, getting the GED, employing her, encouraging her towards missionary work and nursing. In my experience, most Amish and Mennonite youth are encouraged to experience some “wild oat sowing” before they commit to the Church. A few do renounce, so I feel they know they can leave.
