About this listen

Cozy up with this warm, festive rom com novella about being true to your heart, the friendships that define us, and the irresistible pull of holiday magic.

Last year, Rachel Bacharach met the man of her dreams at a Hanukkah party — and then her outgoing best friend Tamara swooped in and “called” Oz Caplan for herself. It’s a typical outcome for the dependable, bookish Rachel, who is never able to extinguish the spark she immediately felt for Oz. But being secretly in love with her best friend’s boyfriend all year hasn’t been easy.

As this year’s party approaches, Oz and Tamara break up. It’s a worst-case scenario when Oz asks Rachel to help him write Tamara love letters to win her back in time for their Hanukkah anniversary. Rachel’s been writing love letters to Oz in her journals for a year; she knows all the words he would need. But will Rachel be able to hide her true feelings from Oz any longer? And might this year’s party finally be Rachel’s chance to trust her heart and put everything on the line for love?

Super Cute and Worth the Listen

I really enjoyed this book. Super sweet, cute and funny. Worth the listen especially since it’s a freebie. Elegantly narrated with likable characters. Highly recommend!

I only the best of what i hear!

I'm going to eat a little crow. I avoid books under 8hrs because the author can't possibly develop a worthwhile story in less than that. Ha! I was wrong. I'll probably listen to this one again too! I'll certainly recommend it. I'll also look for more books from this author.

High hopes dashed

Am I the only one who thinks that Tamara and Oz are 2 really crappy people? Tamara basically uses up Oz and then tries to regift him to Rachel and Oz is so ignorant he is clues. Expecting a cute holiday romance instead got a story about someone with such low self esteem that she was happy to take sloppy leftovers and keep a selfish crappy friend. Even though this was a quick listen it was a waste of time.

Wanted to love it but...

A quick three hour audible original about Hanukkah, and it’s included in Audible plus? Sign me up! Jason Clarke narrating just cemented the deal. Honestly, if a few words and names were changed, Eight Winter Nights by Liz Maverick could have been a Christmas book just as easily, but that’s OK. In fact I like that—the average Jewish person is usually no different than anyone else.

Sadly, though I liked the writing style and the characters, the story itself kind of pissed me off. Here it is in a nutshell: Shy Rachel met Oz at a Hanukkah party. They really hit it off, but then her hot and bubbly best friend Tamara swooped in, took over, and Rachel just walked away.

He dates the best friend for a YEAR. Then Tamara breaks up with him and leaves town and Oz breaks his leg. So Tamara asks Rachel to go take care of him and help him get over her. But Oz wants Rachel’s help to get her back! So she helps him write Tamara love notes based on her own actual writing about him.

Honestly, neither Oz nor her friend Tamara deserve Rachel. He picked the hot girl over the one he connected with and Tamara knew her friend’s feelings. Rachel was a doormat and it just made me sad.

Likes:
•Finally a Hanukkah book for us secular Jews (not religious).
•I actually love the tone and humor of the story.
•The writing style was totally my type.
•Loved the narration.

Dislikes:
•Rachel just seemed like second choice.
•He picked the hot girl over the one he connected with.
•Rachel seemed like a doormat.
•The whole premise of the story pissed me off.

The Narration:
Eva Kaminsky and Jason Clarke are what made Eight Winter Nights so enjoyable. They were wonderful and I highly recommend listening if you grab this one.

The Down & Dirty:
I wanted to love this. The cover is amazing and it’s so rare to get a not overly Jewish, m/f romance. I loved the writing style and the author’s voice, but the story itself just made me mad. She would never be first choice. I still enjoyed the listen because of the writing and narration and the fact that it is a rare book with Jewish characters like myself.

Not as good as I hoped

I hated the heroine and hero. She was a stupid idiot that let her supposed best friend run all over her and he was stupid enough to date said friend for a year despite meeting her first.

A quick and fun holiday read!

Liz Maverick's Eight Winter Nights is a cute holiday read, or in this case listen, that follows a group of friends during Hanukkah in a rom-com of romance lost and having one asking if second chances can happen. I almost gave this book two stars as I wasn't too impressed with it, but it did have it's cute parts so I moved it up to three stars all together. I really struggled connecting to the characters and the world building and the atmosphere of the book, to me, seemed lacking. I also didn't feel the romance and emotion between the main protagonists and even found them frustrating at times. As for how the narrator's were, Eva Kaminsky does a fabulous job and I loved her voice and her character portrayal, but as for Jason Clarke's narrating, I have to say I struggled with it. I enjoyed his voice, but his narration seemed lacking in emotion and depth for a rom-com style book.
