Story
There are some days when being the Garda Sergeant of a small Irish town really tests me. Having to police my family and friends is a necessary evil, but when I’m faced with arresting half the children in the town, and discovering someone close to me among the offenders, well, those days I really wish I’d chosen a different career. Irate parents are not my only problem unfortunately, as I’m then called to manage a baying mob of strangers, bearing placards and demanding change. I’m all for peaceful protest, but these people were threatening the vulnerable, and I’m just not having that.

In the blink of an eye, the peace he’d craved and enjoyed since his days on the battlefield are gone. Meantime, James and Juliet come of age in a world on the brink of chaos, where the remnants of rebellion at home have snowballed into the horrors of yet another world war.

I love this series so far! The heroes are strong and complex, and the heroines are feminine and yet powerful forces in their own right. I wish Audible would pick up the rest of the books. I’d buy them all. The narrator also does a fantastic job. I love her voice, and the inflection she gives to each character. Quality.

Such potential
Reviewed: 08-29-23
I love the premise. It had such potential, however I agree with other reviews that it fell flat on all fronts. The narration was irritating, the male lead had no depth, and the female lead was weak and uninteresting. I fast forwarded through any passionate interactions because of how cringeworthy they all were, and got tired of how the leads were somehow “aroused” by each other with no other connection whatsoever. These two have possibly the worst chemistry I’ve ever encountered. I really wanted to love it, but barely got through it.

Inappropriate focus on group sex - no thank you!!
Reviewed: 06-20-23
Having typed my title, I'm not sure you can have an "appropriate focus on group sex", but I struggled to aptly describe what I found offensive in this particular book. I loved the first in the series, so I automatically downloaded this without reading any reviews. What a disappointment, and embarrassment to have in my library. I'm not a prude, but my goodness, there's only so much a person can take when constantly hearing about "the grotto"; an underground haven for group sex and/or self gratification. One person stated it correctly (at least as far as I listened), nobody is having sex in the book. But, what is in the book is quite frankly disgusting. The author weaves it so well, you wish you could listen to find out the end to the mystery, but I just can't listen anymore. A shame really. It's a matter of having moral values, or finishing this book. Not for me.

I absolutely love this author, and love this narrator... I just don't love this particular book. Recommend checking out all of Rebecca Connolly's other titles. This one just wasn't for me. I listened for an hour or more, then had to return. Will re-read one of her other titles, since I believe I own all of them.
