Story
After years of drowning myself in parties, hookups, and pain, all it takes is one viral sex tape to be given a choice: Hide out on an island or lose my trust fund. Having to share a room with the one man I let hurt me is my worst nightmare. I’m the broken shell of the boy he walked away from on the worst day of my life. I hate him almost as much as I hate myself.

Not for me…

Got the biggest ick possible from both main characters. Couldn’t stand how they were written, their inner monologues or their conversations!
Story read like a rejected first draft of a wanna be hallmark script. Really an exclusive luxury resort “glitched” and double booked you with your childhood crush/first kiss… 🤮
This was my first book by this author so might be a one off but seemed a bit pompous, they definitely broke out the thesaurus and seemed to attempt to wax poetic but fell very flat and read as inauthentic, with me anyway.
Narrators both did a great job, don’t want to discredit their work and performances, just couldn’t get past the characters/story!

Just Nope!!! Buyer Beware!!!
Reviewed: 11-15-24
Firstly I tried to return this title but wasn’t able because I bought it with a credit card and didn’t use an app credit, stupid rule I was previously unaware of.
Secondly the narrators, especially for Rakesh was emotionless and robotic which came across super creepy and too predatory when making sexual comments. Other narrator wasn’t much better, almost like they were instructed to read like that or have never narrated books before or the source material was just that bad, I’ve heard better digitally generated non human narration!
Thirdly the “story” at least as far as I got, this will go unfinished for me, was the dumbest, worst attempt at what should have been an overdone easy trope I’ve ever come across.
Buyer Beware!!! Use your money/credits on anything else!!!

Painful Narration! Seriously WTF???
Reviewed: 10-05-24
I’ve listened to several books narrated by Tor in the past so didn’t think twice about picking this one up but Buyer Beware!!!
I don’t know what producers or editors put the ok on sending this out but Shame on you all! The “accent” bordering on speech impediment used for Kip in this production was actually painful to listen to, especially the slipping in and out of it depending on the word or sentence. Completely took me out of the story, couldn’t care about Kip at all and got zero chemistry between the two characters.
Honestly can’t even tell if the story was good or not just happy to have lived through it.

Theo Decker might be the lead singer of Riven, but he hates being a rock star. The paparazzi, the endless tours, being recognized everywhere he goes - it all makes him squirm. The only thing he doesn't hate is the music. Feeling an audience's energy as they lose themselves in Riven's music is a rush unlike anything else...until he meets Caleb Blake Whitman. Caleb is rough and damaged, yet his fingers on his guitar are pure poetry. And his hands on Theo? They're all he can think about. But Caleb's no groupie - and one night with him won't be enough.

Not sure if it was the story, characters or narration but I couldn’t connect with anything!
Characters seemed dull and one dimensional, very repetitive writing, felt like the characters had internal conversations with them selves and then Identical conversations with other characters multiple times.
Some scenes had so many details I felt like I was drowning and others completely lacked details that had me confused enough to skip back to try to figure things out.
I hope other people like it but wasn’t for me.

Very Blah, literally couldn’t care less about the characters or the “plot” of this story.
Lazy, boring writing, author couldn’t pick a perspective and stick with it, constantly confusing shifting between Both Third person, First Person and somehow even some second person just to keep things extra confusing. Even Mr. North couldn’t seem to keep up with these shifts as he was often using either River or Griffins voice for parts of the story that should have been general omniscient perspective.
Narrator did the best he probably could with the material given???

Everett: There are a ton of reasons why falling for my tiny, adorkable best friend is a terrible idea - starting with the body in my trunk. I have other reasons - he still mourns his late husband. I’m way older, he’s a foot shorter, my tattoo shop is a front, he’s an assistant professor at UT. Still, I can’t help but think we’d be perfect for each other if I didn’t kill people (very, very bad people) for a living.

Juvenile, Piss-poor Writing and Subpar Narration!!!

Don’t waste your time or money on this one folks!!!
I’d swear a teenage kid or self published first time author wrote this book. Seriously the sentence structure and unnecessarily repetitive basic vocabulary, it almost sounded like a kid trying to reach the required word count for an assignment, too many instances of “the light flooded the room with light” well no sh*t.
Author clearly did zero research on FBI procedure, had the agent not only drinking but also getting drunk on duty, obviously wasn’t trained well enough to react, draw his gun, shoot, fight etc. Brice is written as the worst FBI Agent ever!
And don’t even get me started on the completely ridiculous plot point that is the “nude photoshoot” so stupid and unbelievable!
Also, spoiler alert, Tad got Stabbed and Cut in the Leg, Stabbed in the stomach, Stabbed in the arm, and cut additional other times But 12 hours later he’s walking around and hugging people like a bandaid and a magic wand healed him and made even the author forget about his injuries cuz they are never mentioned again but Brice is laid up in a hospital bed from a single stab with “a really big knife”…?
Literally too much other B.S. to mention specifically!
Narrator was a while other hot mess…
Pick an accent or voice and stick with it! If you’re not talented enough to do different voices and accents for each character then know that and don’t try!
Half the time I couldn’t tell who was suppose to be talking, first only Tad had an accent, then his dad found one 60% thru the book, which was supposed to be Texan? Guess it was just poorly done generic souther but he slipped in and out of it so often it was hard to keep up and more often than not it came out as nasally California surfer brah who dropped the occasional “g” from the end of words…
Also for the love of god… it’s “Paps” pronounced like Caps, sort for paparazzi! NOT “Papes” pronounced like Capes! Every time he said it I wanted to punch my phone.
Learn from my mistake readers, avoid like the plague!!!

WTF did I just listen to…?
Reviewed: 08-10-22
It’s possible this just wasn’t my cup of tea but I literally disliked everything about this.
While the idea of sections from a dogs perspective is a novel one I failed to see what it added to the story as a whole. Also the 1 missing star from performance is for the sometimes manic readings of the Calvin sections.
Story made zero sense, none of the characters were, believable, likable or had any redeeming character arc that I desperately kept waiting for.
For a big part of the story I kept hoping the killer would snap to and kill him just so it would be over!
Even the structural of the book itself was bizarre. With the parts, chapters and chapter subsection parts when there wasn’t really enough substance for any of that to be necessary.
Just odd, WTF did I listen to…?

I was too far in to return this for my credit back so attempted to get thru but literally couldn’t. My fault for trying to maximize bang for my buck with the box set.
If you like whinny, self loathing characters, who constantly do the opposite of the thing they just spent 20 minutes saying they were gonna do and with dumb, hard for the narrator to pronounce names then these crap-tastic stories might be for you.
I literally didn’t get 100% thru a single book and frustratedly haven’t even attempted to start the last 3.
Narrator wasn’t terrible but some of his choices of voices for the characters and some very noticeable pronunciation stubbles on top of the already bad writing and characters and I just couldn’t get thru these.
