This is definitely not a cozy murder mystery. I was thinking that it was, but was pleasantly surprised. The main character is a woman who stands for herself. I admire her, and look forward to another book in the series.

Story
Ruby Young's new Boston apartment comes with all the usual perks. Windows facing the brick wall of the next-door building. Heat that barely works. A malfunctioning buzzer. Noisy neighbors. A dead body on the sidewalk outside. And of course, a ghost. Since Cordelia Graves died in her apartment a few months ago, she's kept up her residency, despite being bored out of her (non-tangible) skull and frustrated by her new roommate. When her across-the-hall neighbor, Jake Macintyre, is shot and killed in an apparent mugging gone wrong outside their building, Cordelia is convinced there’s more to it.

Who ever heard of a ghost helping with a murder investigation? Fantasy but fun. It kept my attention most of the time, but I listened in spurts, so I lost some of the momentum.

The dog characters were the best. I didn't really care about the whodunnit, but the Wag Tail Inn and the accommodations for the pets made me smile. I will read another in this series.

I don't give five stars very often, but this book deserves it. Wonderfully woven family stories that drew me in as the characters seemed as if they were real people I knew. And what an unusual event that brought Posey and Freddie together! What an unusual storyline! I was emotionally connected to the family, and found myself reliving feelings from my own childhood upbringing. Lucinda Riley is one of my favorite authors.

Lady Adelaide Compton had prepared herself to say good-bye forever to Detective Inspector Devenand Hunter. It would be a welcome relief not to get mixed up in any more murders, even if it meant never working alongside the handsome detective again...wouldn't it? But then Addie's prim and proper mother, Constance, the Dowager Marchioness of Broughton, is accused of murdering her secret lover, and there can't be enough gentlemen detectives on hand to find the truth.
