Minimally Invasive Information
Reviewed: 04-20-25
First off, it would be nice if they could have hired a narrator who could pronounce atherosclerosis and cholesterol properly. Other than that, the information presented was ok nothing earth shaking. Certainly not the level of insight I had expected from Dr. Barrett from reading his substack. Perhaps he is better in short form than long form. There are better books on this topic.

Story
Today we think statistics are the enemy, numbers used to mislead and confuse us. That’s a mistake, Tim Harford says in The Data Detective. We shouldn’t be suspicious of statistics - we need to understand what they mean and how they can improve our lives: they are, at heart, human behavior seen through the prism of numbers and are often “the only way of grasping much of what is going on around us”.

Bias on Display
Reviewed: 03-02-23
Mr. Harford warns about bias and yet he displays it with his hatred to Donald Trump and Climate "Denialism". He may be too blinkered to realize how incendiary the term "denialism" is. Personally equating a difference in interpretation of data in the same breath as denying the Holocaust is disgusting. What he perhaps doesn't realize is "deniers" like Bjorn Lomborg may actually agree that the climate is warming to some degree and manmade activities affect this to some degree but it is clearly unknown what the overall effects will be 100 years from now. It is possible warmer temperatures will increase crop yields. Furthermore, the solution to what to do about is also not cut and dried. Funny how all the climate activists seem to think big government and higher taxes is the answer. One thing Mr. Harford could answer is why were temperatures around the globe much higher in the 1930s than the 1970s? Could it be that climate cycles can override human produced climate change?

Very Well Done and fair Arab Perspective
Reviewed: 01-08-22
I assume this was meant as an even handed treatment as it had the imprimatur of the wonderful narration of Harry Reasoner. However, the pro-Arab, anti-Israel bias is obvious. As someone who is pro Israel, I have to admit that I did learn some things that I will research to see if they were true and in proper context. So overall a relatively fair treatment from the Arab perspective. I also was stunned by the Roosevelt quote as to why he did not want to take in Jews during WWII. This is what a true racist looks like. Now we know the internment of the Japanese was not Roosevelt's only racist act during WWII. This one resulted in 300,000 dead Jews who could have been saved. Shame.

Story
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Here for the first time, in rich human, political, and scientific detail, is the complete story of how the bomb was developed, from the turn-of-the-century discovery of the vast energy locked inside the atom to the dropping of the first bombs on Japan. Few great discoveries have evolved so swiftly - or have been so misunderstood. From the theoretical discussions of nuclear energy to the bright glare of Trinity, there was a span of hardly more than 25 years.

Story
Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of "when" decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork. Timing, it's often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Reviewed: 01-02-20
Regardless of your health issue, Dr. Cole makes a persuasive case, that you can benefit from reducing your inflammation. Dr. Cole gives simple (but not easy) directions to conduct an elimination diet to determine what foods may and may not be right for you.
He touches on lifestyle issues such as exercise, stress and sleep but is not prescriptive in these areas. To me this does not detract from this book. Dr. Cole focuses on the main source of inflammation in the West and that is diet.
I normally like hearing from the author. While Dr. Cole's read was not terrible, you could tell he was uncomfortable and a bit stilted. I had to listen to it at 1.5 speed just so it would annoy me less. I would not let you deter this from getting the audio book. However, if Dr. Cole happens to read this - please get a professional for your next book. I would rather hear from the author if the author can pull it off, this was not the case here.

Very Thorough
Reviewed: 12-27-19
Very well written - flowed well throughout and did not drag despite the large size. Well worth the read. My one nitpick is that Mukherjee totally passes on the Progressive Margaret Sanger (Planned Parenthood) and her racist reasons for wanting minority abortions. Mukherjee wasn't hesitant to be critical (albeit mildly) of George W. Bush for his restriction of embryonic stem cell research. Overall a great book not infused with left wing ideology other than previously mentioned. Well worth the read.
