Great Mystery!
Reviewed: 08-24-19
The story was great! Surprise twists, parallel story line. But the narration detracted from the book. With the narrator sounding like every sentence was nearing the climax, the actual climaxes were, well, anticlimactic. Mary Peiffer or Barbara Rosenblat would have been great!

Story
Secrets and lies can’t stay buried forever in Cedar Valley. In the summer, hikers and campers pack the small Colorado town’s meadows and fields. And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Season by season, year after year, time passes, and the lies, like the aspens and evergreens that surround the town, take root and spread deep. Now, someone has uncovered the lies, and it is his murder that continues a chain of events that began almost 40 years ago.

But no, I wasn’t even close. The story was wonderful but the narration could’ve easily put me to sleep. The narrator had that soft, dramatic voice where every detail was of equal importance and overly dramatic. She picked up some during the second half but, as much as the next book tempts me, I don’t know if I can handle the narration. I might just check it out of the library and read it.

I thought the story had ended; only to find that there were two more hours. Many twists and turns, much action and kept me on edge. At the end of the book, the beginning seemed a lifetime ago.

I am going to finish the book because the mystery part has piqued my interest. But the continual quips and colloquialisms are getting on my last nerve. Does anyone really talk like that? And, news bulletin , how much better it would be to develop characters with depth of personality than to subject readers to continual banter both in conversation and thought bubbles.

The story started slow and stayed slow through chapter 12. Too much narration and not enough dialogue, which might have been a good thing since the narrators was not good for this book. Her pitch and tone didn't impart any sense of danger or excitement into the story. The portrayal of Jenny was not realistic at all. The story could have been good if the plot were developed better.

I am not a fan of Romance novels. I find them too shallow. But I do enjoy when romance is woven into a more complex story. The villains weren't a surprise to me but I had fun as clues were revealed to support my guess! The narrator did a good job, considering the number of characters, especially the number of female characters.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the story, although know going in that it was written when not too much attention was given to diversity or other perspectives. You won't find balanced views about all the players in the westward movement, especially Native Americans.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I felt like one chapter was closing and another beginning.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator has a pleasant voice but was wrong for most of the roles. The charater Spanish, particularly, was made to sound like an East Indian, instead of like a man from Mexico. The Texans sounded like Bostonians.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably not, unless it was updated to include other perspectives.

What made the experience of listening to Hell Is Empty the most enjoyable?
Listening to Hell is Empty actually was not enjoyable, but I loved it! This story deals with the horrific murders of a serial killer and the author digs deep into his mind. It was hard to listen to some of it and, unlike previous Walt Longmire novels, there was relief but no joy at the end of the story. Good people are still gone.
What did you like best about this story?
The author weaves together many background stories and perspectives into this book and you really have to pay attention! I used the 30 second back feature on my ipod several times!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
One of the Walt Longmire TV series episodes is based on this story. However, it is not nearly as complicated or dark as this novel!
