About this listen

“I couldn't put down Inherit the Bones. Small town Colorado police detective Gemma Monroe is a human and fallible heroine I can't wait to meet again, and Littlejohn's prose is lyrical and gripping - the book - is a sure bet for one of the finest debut novels of the year.” (Deborah Crombie)

Secrets and lies can’t stay buried forever in Cedar Valley.

In the summer, hikers and campers pack the small Colorado town’s meadows and fields. And in the winter, skiers and snowboarders take over the mountains. Season by season, year after year, time passes, and the lies, like the aspens and evergreens that surround the town, take root and spread deep.

Now, someone has uncovered the lies, and it is his murder that continues a chain of events that began almost 40 years ago. Detective Gemma Monroe’s investigation takes her from the seedy grounds of a traveling circus to the powerful homes of those who would control Cedar Valley’s future.

Six months pregnant, with a partner she can’t trust and colleagues who know more than they’re saying, Gemma tracks a killer who will stop at nothing to keep those secrets buried.

Beautifully written, with a riveting plot and a richly drawn cast of characters, Inherit the Bones is a mesmerizing debut from Emily Littlejohn.

I thought I had it figured out

But no, I wasn’t even close. The story was wonderful but the narration could’ve easily put me to sleep. The narrator had that soft, dramatic voice where every detail was of equal importance and overly dramatic. She picked up some during the second half but, as much as the next book tempts me, I don’t know if I can handle the narration. I might just check it out of the library and read it.

Almost didn't finish it

I enjoyed the story but felt that much of the book was just unnecessary filler.

Dramatic

This book has a very specific style of writing. Far too many adjectives and adverbs. So much description where it isn’t needed. The narrator has a very whispery dramatic tone as well, accenting the style of writing.
That being said it wasn’t unsatisfying. The story was good and the characters like able.

START OF A GREAT SERIES!

This is my first experience with Emily Littlejohn. It was a great story by a very talented author. I wasn't sure for the first hour whether I was going to like the narration of Harper Landry. However, she grows on you as the story develops and by the end of the story, you realize how fitting her voice is. I am looking forward to the second book, It's definitely worth the credit.

Great read (listen)

1) Harper Landry is a great reader.
2) Nothing philosophical about the reasons for liking the book. It simply kept us interested from beginning to end.

not a gripping story

The story was alright I could take it or leave it. Some of the discriptive parts were a little long and drawn out felt more like page fillers than adding any substance to the actual story. The narrator was wonderful she did a great job!

refreshing take on female detectives

well written with a nice flow and a good story. Great change on the .main character not being a superhero bad_ss.I strongly
disagree with review that it was to descriptive that's like saying Mozart used too many notes..Emily paints a vivid picture with her word usage.

Murder Mystery

I can't say it was bad. I can't say it was good. Maybe try a different editor and shorten the story by a couple of chapters.
