Story
In the heart of the South Pacific lies Point Nemo, the most desolate and remote place on Earth. At its core is a dead zone, devoid of life, where government agencies crash their obsolete satellites and space stations, confident they won't harm a soul. When the International Space Station suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets through the atmosphere, it's here that Mission Specialist Julie Rohr, an astrobiologist studying living space dust called xylem, finds herself marooned. Julie's only hope for rescue lies in the hands of her estranged father, Dr. Finn Maddern, a renowned mycologist.

I hope I can get all the way through this...

So, there's no better than RC Bray. He can make food labels sound great. I also love Jeremy Robinson's books... But here's where I am getting stuck... SPOILER ALERT..!!
SPACE: When there's an unexpected failure for an object in space, the engineers have SOME control over where it can be de-orbited... But not so much as to make it hit a spot in the ocean when the failure could occur anywhere in orbit. So to bring down the escape pod from orbit to Point Nemo is not believable.
SPLASH DOWN: We have a lot of experience retrieving space capsules from the ocean. We can get people pretty quickly. I understand this was an unexpected space capsule recovery, but I think they would have splashed her down near some ships that could be asked to help with the recovery effort over crashing her at point nemo - which they didn't know had land and which has taken them DAYS to get a ship to... Just unbelievable.
HALO: You can't expect to drop two untrained people out of a plane at 20k and expect that they will survive the jump. At a minimum, they will tumble and roll until the chute opens and they tangle the lines and crash into the ocean. At the same time, these parachutes packed for HALO still have a reserve chute and are fantastically reliable. To have one fail is so very rare. ALSO, they say "Distance to jump is 5 Mikes"...and then proceed with 20 minutes worth of activity before they actually jump. 5 Miles from the DMZ is basically a minute or two before you need to jump. So all of the jump story was WAY off..
DAD: All of the father daughter stuff - up to this point - was so very cringy.
Anyway, I am going to try plow through the rest of this book but it's getting less enjoyable than a mayonnaise jar label reading...

Couldn't put it down! Snowflake reviews?
Reviewed: 02-23-24
This book grabs you from the start and pulls you along for a hair-raising ride..! Probably my favorite LL book to date.
There are MINIMAL politics in this book. I think MC mentions the Orange Jesus only once. It's almost hard to believe that the people that run around calling everyone snowflakes are 100x more sensitive about anything that disparages their Great Pumpkin.
Yes, he talks about the pandemic - maybe 6 or so times. It happened in real life so all the low-IQ folks that believe it was just the flu are asking to see Michael Connelly's manager, so ignore their reviews. This last comment may be flagged by the Karrens / Darrens as making fun of their disability...but let's see.

Not sure why there are negative comments about the narration. The narrator did such a great job that your brain switches between characters effortlessly - and that's what you want. Yes, there are some negative references to Trump in here...but not enough to take away from the story.

I read this many, many years ago...so I was excited to revisit it on Audible. But the horrible accent for Zaphod was as painful as Vogon poetry and I had to stop. I also didn't remember the story being this stupid, but then I only made it to chapter five. Book One was awesome in performance and story but this is like bad fan fiction.

I missed the signs about the sexual content
Reviewed: 11-17-21
I am pro LGTBQ+ rights and I welcome any literature that highlights any kind of loving, consenting, legal relationship. I just missed the signs in the reviews and the book's description that this was detailed male / male gay sexual activity. There's nothing wrong w/ that...it's just not my up of tea and I couldn't make it through their first sexual encounter.

It is tough to suspend disbelief and get into the story when the author has the main character doing things that are just ridiculous.
for example, and there are no real spoilers in this example, when a software update is needed to allow a experimental device to more rapidly rotate in and out of dimensions, they do an over the air software update. Are you kidding me..? no amount of science fiction writing will get the reader to believe that an over the air software update happens quickly and without error. we all have our cellular service provider nightmares to disavow us of believing in this.

I think I’m pretty hard to please when it comes to science fiction. I’ve probably returned more books then I’ve finished. But ruins of the earth was fantastic. I enjoyed every minute of it and of course, the narration really brought it to life. I was surprised by the accuracy of some of the descriptive scenes (like free diving). Just excellent throughout. I wasn’t disappointed and I don’t think you will be either.
