Story
Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So, when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.

It was okay

I disliked the fact that it was set in the 1950s but I never remembered that fact ,they talked about skittles and road horses most of the time and had arranged marriages.I felt like the author herself forgot they were in modern times even though the backwoods of Kentucky and other things I don't want to mention to ruin the book.

The storyline itself was good but it was so many stories, past, present and fiction. The grandma's book added too many names that often confused me .It all goes togethor in the end but I just feel I could have read less of grandmas book. The storytellers life seemed like an afterthought, always talking about physical problems but never really explaining what went on.

As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story...until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.
