About this listen

The instant New York Times best seller

“Looking for a suspense novel that will keep you up until way past midnight? Look no further than Lock Every Door, by Riley Sager.” (Stephen King)

The next heart-pounding thriller from New York Times best-selling author Riley Sager follows a young woman whose new job apartment sitting in one of New York’s oldest and most glamorous buildings may cost more than it pays.

No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile and mysterious buildings. Recently heartbroken and just plain broke, Jules is taken in by the splendor of her surroundings and accepts the terms, ready to leave her past life behind.

As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid, who comfortingly reminds her of the sister she lost eight years ago. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems and the dark history hidden beneath its gleaming facade is starting to frighten her, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story...until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

Searching for the truth about Ingrid’s disappearance, Jules digs deeper into the Bartholomew's sordid past and into the secrets kept within its walls. What she discovers pits Jules against the clock as she races to unmask a killer, expose the building’s hidden past, and escape the Bartholomew before her temporary status becomes permanent.

Critic reviews

“Urban paranoia has a deliciously Gothic new address.” (Ruth Ware)

“The Bartholomew is an apartment building of terrifying secrets. You'll find startling twists and alarming surprises down every dark hallway. It's too late to lock the doors - the horror is already inside. My favorite thriller of the year!” (R. L. Stine, author of Goosebumps)

“The author, writing under a pen name, relates ominous events and spooky developments with skill, adding an element of social commentary and a surprise twist ending - elevating this exercise in terror above the ordinary shocker.” (Wall Street Journal)

This was a fun book. Well, fun in the way that only psychological thrillers can be. While I had pretty much guessed the premise of the story and what was happening from early on, it didn’t take away from the book at all. I listened on a long weekend trip nearly straight through. At one point I found myself even sneaking my earbuds into the bathroom when I was at a social event I had to attend just to get another chapter in. It was that gripping! The writing was superb, as was the narrator. It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a book so much. Looking forward to finding more from this author!

A gripping psychological thriller!

I purchased this expecting a ghost ghost story or thriller. The book was just... okay. The plot is a bit predictable and the protagonist forgettable. If you’re looking for something light to listen to on a drive or while cleaning the house on a Saturday morning, this would do.

Decent Read

This is my second book by this author and it was a bit disappointing. It’s very slow in the beginning and the main character is annoying on how “introspective” she tries to be. She talks a lot about being “abandoned” when in reality she wasn’t entirely abandoned. You could skip 3/4ths of the book and get the entire plot and premise. The ending was good but there was a lot of fluff and descriptives that I felt detracted from the story and making the main character relatable.

Just Okay

Lock Every Door is the literary equivalent of an entertaining B-movie thriller. Think about it too much and it may not hold up. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the well-paced ride and, like Sager's two previous novels, it's very entertaining. Dylan Moore's narration was excellent and the novel (clearly inspired by Rosemary's Baby) hooked me from the start and had me riveted until the end.

A Good Summer Read
