Story
In 1851, Olive Oatman was a 13-year-old pioneer traveling west toward Zion, with her Mormon family. Within a decade, she was a white Indian with a chin tattoo, caught between cultures. The Blue Tattoo tells the harrowing story of this forgotten heroine of frontier America. Orphaned when her family was brutally killed by Yavapai Indians, Oatman lived as a slave to her captors for a year before being traded to the Mohave, who tattooed her face and raised her as their own.

I really liked this book. I love history and found it to be very interesting. This book is a correction for all of the misinformation and made up stories that have been printed about Olive in the past. I learned a lot and loved that.

Story
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

I have never heard 40 year old women talk so juvenile…and all of the mature women in my family are very silly people. The immature banter was impossible to listen to. Before the age was mentioned I thought the main character was 18-21 years NOT 40!! Nope

LOTS AND LOTS of LONG wordy descriptions
Reviewed: 12-09-22
The story would have been 5 stars if not for the never ending LONG descriptions! The author would say the same sentence 8 different ways to describe one thing, feeling or moment. Seriously I put my phone down, put in a load of laundry came back in the room and the narrator was STILL describing the same moment. So irritating!
This is sad because I really did love the story itself and the narrator was good. Unfortunately, I found myself fast forwarding through all of the endless adjectives and commentary to jump back into the story line.

I can’t understand the 5 star reviews. It was one giant cliche. Nobody talks in real life the way these characters do. It was like listening to a bad 1930’s black and white gangster movie. Had to force myself to finish it.

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.
