Story
What does divorcing Hollywood’s most powerful jerk get you? In my case, blacklisted and a ticket to rock bottom. A one-time studio executive, I’m now scrabbling as a newly licensed P.I. in the city that popularized noir. And I’ve just landed a job at a shabby downtown agency. Watch out, LA! But that was before I discovered the agency’s specialty—hunting monsters. The actual kind. Suddenly, I’m learning about a side of the city that makes horror seem like a documentary: vampires, werewolves, hostile spirits, and all manner of magic.

I wasn't sure where the story was going as it started with Hollywood's hidden puppeteers .. but quickly gathered speed crashing into the spooky and weird. I liked it. I know liked it because after finishing the book I was horrified (ok .. disappointed but horrified sounds better .. and reflects my feeling better) .. oh no! I have to wait for the next book! Bummer!!

Turns out there are monsters in the world. Why couldn't my midlife crisis involve a new hairstyle? I went from ordinary working gal to demon killer. Sounds exciting? Not really, seeing as how I got fired from my job, my apartment was trashed, and the cops think I'm involved in something shady.

It only took less than a minute to realize that I had a gem to listen to. The writing is excellent, love the MC and top tier narration. My only complaint is the length .. something many of us feel for a really good book - never long enough.

A few days ago I watched a video on "Legio IX" .. the lost legion. Happily I ran across this book on audible .. enjoyed it enough that I will be purchasing Book 2 when it comes out. To me .. the best "review" of a book is when you finish one and immediately want to get the next one in the series.
Mr. Edelheit did an excellent job in bringing to life the men of the 9th. If is my firm belief that underneath culture and language people are pretty much the same creatures. In the novel I see guys that I know from my own 20 years in the US Army. One of my favorite comments to someone about people in ancient times is that .. I can see in my mind a Roman officer in charge of building an aqueduct with his hands on his hips .. staring in disbelief at one of the workmen with him saying something like ... "Remus .. you IDIOT!!! When the gods issued brains you must have been asleep .."
Good stuff. Looking forward to the next installment.

Story
In the year 2107, the world has both made astounding leaps forward and reduced humanity to its most basic existence. While the megacorps and those who rule them enjoy lives of extraordinary comfort and ease, most people barely scrape by, doing whatever they can to keep going. Juliet Bianchi is one of the latter. She works cutting metal in a scrapyard and doesn't have much to show for it except for a small group of equally bereft, fiercely loyal friends. Still, she maintains a bright disposition, possessing more hope and optimism than anyone would expect her to—and she's going to need it.

When Alice Verianna went to sleep, she was just another teen from the Denver suburbs. She definitely didn't expect to be transported to a magical alternate dimension, inhabited by monsters and presided over by a mysterious System. Here, people resemble RPG characters and everyone has access to their own status screens. Grappling with the mechanics of the elusive System isn't the only challenge Alice faces. It seems an underground organization known as the Society of Starry Eyes has taken a particular interest in other dimensions.

It’s New Year’s in Sinful, and the competition for the New Year’s Queen is heating up as the warring churches go head-to-head. Fortune Redding is not the sequined dress kind of woman, but reluctantly agrees to partake in the debacle so that Ida Belle and Gertie can best their nemesis, Celia, who’s put up former Sinful mean girl RJ Rogers. RJ and her friend Ricky Benoit left plenty of devastation in their wake when they fled Sinful after high school. So when they return and Ricky is found dead, there’s no shortage of suspects.

Great story. I was hesitant at first .. one of the reviews was talking about the book being more woke .. and mentioned a cross-dresser. My thought .. after a bit was .. is that about Ronald? Well .. turns out .. yes. Nooo .. that doesn't make the book more 'woke' .. that is simply weird Ronald.
Like in the other books the story winds all over the place with intersecting plot lines crisscrossing. My only complaint .. and it isn't a major one is the same one I have had through all the books in that Carter seems to have no idea in the slightest about the 1st amendment as well as being really sketchy about the 4th and others. Call me crazy but I don't think that a Deputy should be able to run his town like a a tin pot dictator .. intentions be dammed. Not that uncommon in Louisiana perhaps where might often has made right. Like I said .. I accept the character without necessarily agreeing with some of his actions - they were fine for an NCO where rights are given up for mission.
We had Celia her usual poisonous self .. at one point I thought that Ida Bell might actually shoot her .. but alas .. that did not happen. Yet. I think serving her up to Godzilla instead of a casserole would be a great thing.
Finally .. the title of this review refers to one of the characters honoring Fortune with that a bit of that title. Fortune may well be an angel .. even if only for a day .. but I suspect it would be one carrying a sword to slay demons.

Sophie's Choices
Reviewed: 04-19-23
Well. My prime rating for a book is that having listened to the end .. if I immediately want to start listening to the next in the series ... that I WANT to listen to the next book .. that I might just slide over to Amazon.com to look for the book on Kindle .. that says everything. Holy Moses .. this went every direction I would not have foreseen and I was caught completely by surprise. Sophie has to make decisions .. choices that effect everything.
Read this book .. first read the others in the series. They seem to be getting better each time.

The man on the moon was dead. They called him Charlie. He had big eyes, abundant body hair, and fairly long nostrils. His skeletal body was found clad in a bright red spacesuit, hidden in a rocky grave. They didn’t know who he was, how he got there, or what had killed him. All they knew was that his corpse was 50 thousand years old - and that meant this man had somehow lived long before he ever could have existed.

I gave five stars to Performance, Story and Overall. I have read this book perhaps four times and have listened to it another four times. This is simply a 'Grand Adventure'. First published in 1977 it has aged pretty well I think ... Mr. Hogan did not get it exactly right in regard to advancements in things like the internet and smart phones and that sort of thing but .. he was .. call it .. "in the area". In the years since there have been many discoveries in Paleontology so we have a better understanding of hominid evolution so perhaps that bit shows it's age a bit. That matters little ..it is a 'rip' of a story. I think it could be updated easily enough for a grand movie .. except where Holyweird would probably screw it up.

I enjoy the series and am listening again .. but .. I simply do not like Deputy Carter. I don't care how well meaning he is .. he apparently has no use for the US Constitution .. I assume that is in part him being a former US Marine and him thinking he knows best for everyone. That we as US citizens have rights as provided in the constitution to protect us from an overbearing government seems to have escaped the Deputy.
