Story
Safari Adventure is a small but popular zoo that entertains visitors from all over Texas - until one morning when most of the animals escape and a body is found on the premises. Game warden John Marlin works closely with the sheriff’s office, at first to capture the animals, and then to solve the mystery of the missing zookeeper. But local good old boys Red O’Brien and Billy Don Craddock just might figure it all out first, after they pick up a hitchhiker with a questionable past and some inside information that makes him a prime suspect.

Slowly but surely Red and Billie Don have taken over the Blanco County mysteries but that is okay. I used to think I wanted to grow up to be John Marlin but I realized that I am actually closer to Red and Billie Don. These novels are hilarious and fun. My only complaint is that Ben Rehder doesn't write nearly as fast as I read or listen.

Story
Paul Conklin is a rather ordinary, 30-ish fellow, sharing his ordinary, present-day San Francisco apartment with the ghosts of his dead wife and daughter. Suzanna's cooking for him again, and Cloe's bouncing around the apartment in her school uniform, and things are almost back to normal. But a piece of Paul realizes he's really bug-f--k nuts, or at least that's what he thinks. He has no idea that a Primus caste demon from the Netherworld covets his soul.

This book was not what I expected and took me a little to get into it. Once I did I became enthralled and now I am going to have to buy the next book in the series. It is that good. It could use a little more show me instead of tell me but overall the story is engaging.

Preachy
Reviewed: 09-01-17
I have read all of Krueger's books so far and he does get a little preachy. This time he went overboard. He reduced a very complex problem with illegal immigration to "scared people write stupid laws" that should be ignored. Border Patrolmen enforcing those laws think that people who look Hispanic are more likely to be illegally in this country than people who look Scandinavian. Everybody who enters this country illegally is really a good person. So in the plot of this book because bad laws should be ignored we end up with the good guys killing lots of people and in some cases hiding the bodies because, like immigration laws we don't believe in, dealing with the legal consequences of the killings would be inconvenient.
David Chandler did an excellent job of narrating and the story was engaging.

The colored lights on the snow gave it a holiday appearance, but the dead woman's body in the yard added a grisly touch. How did Ina Bell Patrick die? Who killed her? And why? The dead woman had no direct heirs, so two nephews and a niece stood to inherit. Dr. Laura Morris was left to make all the arrangements, attorney Roger Morris could certainly use the money, and Zack Morris had disappeared two years earlier.

It was well written and I loved the narrator.

I really love this series and the narrator is great. Heroine was accused of a crime, acquitted at trial, and in the first book actually proved she was innocent but is still tainted. So she works for a lawyer and gets in over her head at times. Fun read and a great series!
