Story
Badgelor has been patient, or at least as patient as a homicidal badger can be. With the celebration of Grebthar Day, it's finally time to go get Charles! Nothing is going to stop Jim and his companions, not even the signs of the Dark Overlord's return. This adventure could be Windfall's greatest yet, or it could be its absolute downfall.

Weak finish
Reviewed: 04-10-25
As I was reading the first book, I liked it so much that I purchased several more.
The last section of this book was so unsatisfying that if I hadn’t already purchased the next one, I would have just stopped here and gone on to something else. Honestly, I’m not sure I’ll purchase the rest. Starting the next book feels like something I should do, just to get it over with. Not something I want to do.
Big swings. Big loses without any impact. All of the story elements that kept me riveted up till now are gone. This was probably meant to be a cliffhanger, but I just don’t care what happens next.

Ok story, wooden performance
Reviewed: 08-04-24
The story sounded more like “Fan fiction” than a seasoned writer, but wasn’t bad.
The performance sounded almost computer generated. Either that or someone with no knowledge of the book or its contents did a “cold read”. This may the the case as occasionally you’ll hear a line that sounds like it was recorded in a tiled room. Lots of echo.
If you’re a big fan of Logan in the Weapon X era, you may enjoy it.

Breathless and painstakingly researched, this is a stunning debut mystery in which Sherlock Holmes unmasks Jack the Ripper. Lyndsay Faye perfectly captures all the color and syntax of Conan Doyle’s distinctive nineteenth-century London.

I’ve read a number of non-ACD Sherlock stories, but one stands out as most similar in narrative and dialogue. Other than the impression that Holmes was a bit nicer and a touch less flawed, you might believe it to be one of Doyle’s own original tales, brought to life with a near flawless performance.

I loved this book. But because I listened to the audiobook, it’s hard to say how much of it was the great writing and how much of it was the great performance.
I would absolutely consider any other book I came across by this author, or recorded by this talented actor.

Great story & another great performance by RC Bray
Reviewed: 01-27-24
Bray is awesome. The couple of well known actors were pretty good. Most of the others were somewhere between “Ok” and pretty bad.
For instance, the scene that featured Joe reuniting with a former crew mate, which I was really looking forward to, had an actress sound like she was doing a “cold read”. The was magnified by the contrast between her performance and the true awesomeness of RC Bray.
The sound design was also an issue for me. Even listening to the high quality version on really good headphones, the sound effects were more impediment than enhancement.
That being said, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this audiobook. Its strength’s far out weigh its weaknesses.
