Story
Effie has most inconveniently fallen in love with the dashing Mr. Benedict Ashbrooke. There’s only one problem: Effie is a housemaid, and a housemaid cannot marry a gentleman. It seems that Effie is out of luck until she stumbles into the faerie realm of Lord Blackthorn, who is only too eager to help her win Mr. Ashbrooke’s heart. All he asks in return is that Effie sew ten thousand stitches onto his favorite jacket.

Story
Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered, since his men were slaughtered, since the king of Adarlan spared him from a killing blow, but left his body broken. His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica - the stronghold of the southern continent's mighty empire.

Story
Being a highly sensitive person means you’re probably highly misunderstood and you may feel like you’re too empathetic for your own good. Your intuition and empathy create situations where you always put others first and say “yes” to everything, regardless of how you feel or what you need. As a result, you end up in unhealthy relationship dynamics that leave you exhausted, resentful, and stressed.

Nothing new
Reviewed: 10-14-24
Sadly, this book does not contribute anything new to the research and support of HSPs. I'm disappointed, I was really looking forward to the Title's promise ("a guide to stop people pleasing"), but instead I found recycled facts about HSPs, long lists of "self care" we're supposed to engage in daily (which, when added up, would equal 30 hours a day of self care!), and very little applicable strategies for reducing people pleasing. This book essentially paraphrases Elain Aron's research, adds a little pop psychology ("trust yourself!" "you're a super hero!") but lacks novelty. Worst of all, it doesn't give what it promises: actionable, well developed steps to stop people pleasing. Anyone who's read anything about HSPs will feel bored by this book, and let down with the 1 and only chapter that even addresses the titular topic, with the advice boiling down to generic suggestions such as: "pause before saying yes" and "no is a full sentence." Sadly, this book doesn't add anything new to the conversation of people pleasing, and spends much more time listing out dozens and dozens of self-care activities to engage in ("use essential oils", "take a bath", "do deep breathing", "be sure to eat a healthy diet and exercise every day"). I exercise daily, eat well, meditate, journal, practice self compassion (Kristin Neff is a great resource for this!), spend time outside, and I *still* want actual advice for people pleasing. This book just didn't deliver.

Story
Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

Story
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Pros: The presence of magic, fantasy creatures, and adventure.
Cons: The main characters are hard to like, being too narcissistic and hedonistic to root for. It's as if the world of Harry Potter took place on the set of HBO's "Girls"... all the magic spells of Hogwarts, but instead of endearing protagonists, the pages are filled with self-absorbed characters lacking any integrity. This book was described as a "coming of age" story, but has zero positive role models or moral guidance, and the characters basically indulge themselves without learning anything valuable. By the end of the book, I was rooting for "the bad guy" just because the protagonists are so unlikeable. Definitely not for kids, but also not for adults looking to escape the moral bankruptcy of modern life.
