Publisher's summary

In this riveting sequel to the national best seller The Queen of the Tearling, the evil kingdom of Mortmesne invades the Tearling, with dire consequences for Kelsea and her realm.

With each passing day, Kelsea Glynn is growing into her new responsibilities as queen of the Tearling. By stopping the shipments of slaves to the neighboring kingdom of Mortmesne, she crossed the Red Queen, a brutal ruler whose power derives from dark magic, who is sending her fearsome army into the Tearling to take what is hers. And nothing can stop the invasion.

But as the Mort army draws ever closer, Kelsea develops a mysterious connection to a time before the Crossing, and she finds herself relying on a strange and possibly dangerous ally: a woman named Lily, fighting for her life in a world where being female can feel like a crime. The fate of the Tearling - and that of Kelsea's own soul - may rest with Lily and her story, but Kelsea may not have enough time to find out.

In this dazzling sequel, Erika Johansen brings back favorite characters, including the Mace and the Red Queen, and introduces unforgettable new players, adding exciting layers to her multidimensional tale of magic, mystery, and a fierce young heroine.

More of bridge between the first and third of the

This book was slow and seemed more like a bridge between the first book and the third. Still exciting but only captured half my attention.

First book was better

Good, but not as good as the first book. Too many separate storylines at the beginning.

book great, change in narrator, odd

I love this book, quite possibly more than the first. less teen angst and more adult trials. Davina Porter is a fantastic narrator, but I'm used to het doing the entire Outlander series, so it's odd going from the wonderful Katherine Kellgren to Claire Fraser, haha.
good though.

Tearling

Book 2 is really good. Erika Johansen is good at story telling. I plan to read the other Tealing story .

The imagination of this book is great

Although I liked the reader of first book more, this reader wasn’t terrible. But the story is great, traveling between is something I didn’t expect. I dove into the worlds of this book. Just a good book!

Book is Awesome, narrator is lacking

These books are phenomenal! This one was much darker than the first but the plot line is so wonderful. I'm hooked! But the narrator in this book was awful. I don't think she knew the characters or listened to the first book at all. she made all the men sound old, made Kelsea sound like a bitter old shrew. she would shout things that were to be said calmly, and vice versa. I really doubt she read or understood the story and I hope she's not the one to read the next book.

Couple comments

I won't get into the laughable socialist, anti-conservative American propaganda promoted in the book, as both are legitimately presented influences within the story despite its logical error and proof of the author's dreamy ideals. The tale is enchanting, well-balanced and addictive. I do wish there was less explicit violence described in such minute detail, but I don't take points away for that since it is a personal preference of mine to avoid gore in my leisurely activities. I preferred the narrator from the first book over this woman simply because she sounded so...old. She did a fantastic job however despite not really being what I would imagine a 19 year old woman to sound like.

Looking forward to the next book despite my criticisms. Great work-
