Winter 1940: With soldiers parading down the Avenue des Champs-Élysees, Nazi flags dangling from the Arc de Triomphe, and the Eiffel Tower defaced with German propaganda, Parisians have little to celebrate as Christmas approaches. Police Inspector Henri Lefort's wishes for a quiet holiday season are dashed when the Gestapo orders him to investigate the disappearance of Dr. Viktor Brandt, a neurologist involved in a secret project at one of Paris's hospitals.

Horrible narrator

The story was predictable although Pryor does a good job giving a sense of place and time. But the narrator was horrible. A miserable choice for a book about a French detective.

Sleazy
Reviewed: 07-06-24
DNF. Ugh.
Holy Island sounded right up my alley - a police procedural in an interesting setting. A local girl is found murdered in the ancient priory. A DCI on leave is forced to step back into heading an investigation due to the remote locale. But this one was a miss for me. This had way too much romance, actually too much lust, for my taste. My mind kept thinking “bodice ripper”. Did you know, that style in the present day is called a neo-bodice ripper? What’s tacky though is that the MC is male. And what’s meant to be sexy came across as sleazy. I had to give up before my eyes rolled out of my head.
The bad writing didn’t help either.
The only good news is that this is one series I DON’T need to continue.

Story
Twenty-one-year-old Hardy “Hardly” Reed—good-natured, easygoing, usually stoned—is drifting through life. A minimum-wage scare actor at an amusement park, he avoids unnecessary effort and unrealistic ambitions. Then one day he notices two children, around six or seven, sitting all alone on a bench. Hardly checks if they’re okay and sees injuries on both children. Someone is hurting these kids. He reports the incident to Child Protective Service. That should be the end of it. After all, Hardly's not good at looking out for himself so the last thing he wants to do is look out for anyone else.

McClain was fabulous. His embodiment of Hardly really took it up a notch. To me, this was a coming of age story, even if the main character was older than most COA characters. It’s dark though, so don’t expect a feel good story.

Story
When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town. But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.
