About this listen

When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town.

But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

...don’t let the series end this way.
I get it. I see WHY... but, a bit cliche, perhaps? Still, as with all the rest in the series, this one is excellent ( ending not withstanding). These characters are “real” people because Mr. Grainger is a remarkable writer and has created something wonderful. Read the entire series—it will not disappoint.

I am still processing this final book in this series but am looking forward to the next series and am sure I will not be sorry.

Really excellent series of books, and beautifully read. I’m genuinely disappointed to have finished it.

The reader was just perfect for the story. Could not have been better. I just finished listening and I am kind of stunned at the moment.

I just adore this series and so glad this didn’t end up being the last.
Gildart Jackson perfectly channels DC.

Great main character

Great change for D.C. to make. Love how the author continues to use characters and references to prior books. Narrator makes D.C. come to life. I have listened to every book in the series and loved them all.

Love this series.

I did not want the series to end. But like all good things there is an end. BUT WAIT…. There is another chapter coming. And Waters becomes the main character of a new parallel series.
Hallelujah
You must listen/read them all in order.

Excellent in every way.

The whole series is outstanding.

The entire series was awesome- except this last extremely frustrating book- I hated the constant knot in my stomach and the ending was just awful!!! I hate to see a great series come to this last book - it could have been so incredible-

What a bummer!

Some of this was hard to listen to because of the narration. He makes Smith sound like a moron sometimes. But they also doesn’t help. This books were written in the 21st-century, and he still refers to women as girls. And he makes sexist illusions to their behavior. What the heck is up with that? Time to enter the 21st century. We don’t call women girls anymore. Just like we don’t call Black people, colored this author really needs to get with the times. I enjoy the mysteries, and I enjoy the characters, but I’m actually starting to feel guilty for reading these books.

The reader is getting more annoying
