Publisher's summary

When 14-year-old Zoe Johnson doesn't come home on a Monday night in early December, the alarm bells in Kings Lake Central police station do not ring straight away - after all, she's from the Dockmills, one of the toughest estates in the town.

But for Detective Sergeant DC Smith, due to retire in just three weeks' time, there are some strange echoes of the case that has haunted him for the past 13 years. Maybe it's simply his over-developed sense of irony, or maybe, in his final days as a police officer, Smith must look once more into the eyes of a serial killer.

Please...

...don’t let the series end this way.
I get it. I see WHY... but, a bit cliche, perhaps? Still, as with all the rest in the series, this one is excellent ( ending not withstanding). These characters are “real” people because Mr. Grainger is a remarkable writer and has created something wonderful. Read the entire series—it will not disappoint.

I am still processing this final book in this series but am looking forward to the next series and am sure I will not be sorry.

Fantastic

Really excellent series of books, and beautifully read. I’m genuinely disappointed to have finished it.

A Fitting Conclusion

I have loved this series and loved the character of D.C. Smith so it was hard to get to the very last sentence without feeling wistful. Just brilliant in every way.

Exquisitely Done

This one has stayed with me, as it's been weeks since I've finished and I've read several books since. I'd found this series by reading Peter Grainger's Songbird, not realizing I was out of order as I'd never heard of the DC Smith series. I then read the entire DC Smith series and upon finishing A Private Investigation, had to immediately re-read Songbird.

The character development in the series is second to none. The details rang so true, and will do so for anybody who's been part of a workplace team, almost regardless of industry. Not a false note in any of them, yet far from predictable.

No spoilers here, but just suffice to say the narrator and writer are perfection in unison to deliver one of the most compelling endings to a book. I thought my cold, hard heart would burst in the last pages/moments of this book, and it has stayed with me like an echo, or shadow of both light and darkness, a reminder how cruel and unfair and beautiful life and love can be.

Great Writing

I really enjoyed this book. However, I was saddened by the ending. There were a couple of times I thought the story line was a little slow but overall the book was a very good listen.

Compelling

The reader was just perfect for the story. Could not have been better. I just finished listening and I am kind of stunned at the moment.

Great main character

I just adore this series and so glad this didn’t end up being the last.
Gildart Jackson perfectly channels DC.

Love this series.

Great change for D.C. to make. Love how the author continues to use characters and references to prior books. Narrator makes D.C. come to life. I have listened to every book in the series and loved them all.

The whole series is outstanding.

I did not want the series to end. But like all good things there is an end. BUT WAIT…. There is another chapter coming. And Waters becomes the main character of a new parallel series.
Hallelujah
You must listen/read them all in order.

Excellent in every way.
