Story
2016: Thirty-four-year-old Mari Starwood is still grieving after her mother’s death as she travels to the storied island of Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. She’s come all the way from California with nothing but a name on a piece of paper: Elizabeth Devereaux, the famous but reclusive Vineyard painter. When Mari makes it to Mrs. Devereaux’s stunning waterfront farm under the guise of taking a painting class with her, Mrs. Devereaux begins to tell her the story of the Smith sisters, who once lived there.

I will recommend this book…for high school aged people. The story is predictable, the dialogue uninspired and the characters boarder on boring.

Lots of sadness
Reviewed: 06-15-25
Regardless of the dark overwhelming depressing theme of abuse and distinction I continued reading to the end. The premise of one person given 3 names at birth and where that lead in his life was intriguing. Once into the story I was determined to see it through. It may trigger some people and there should be a warning to that effect. And yet as I said I found the story concept unique and I needed to reach each named characters conclusion.

Did not enjoy the main character’s constant self criticism. Unrealistic that she could mess everything up at every turn.

Story
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Story
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

There were mysteries to discover which kept the story interesting. I found the continuous declarations of guilt tiresome after a time. I was happy no storyline was left unfinished.

Story
Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

So many miscommunications, so many mis understandings, so many missed connections the book almost became frustrating as I wished some would just hurry up and reach their conclusion. The ending chapters finally relieved my frustration as the multiple story lines drew to a conclusion.
